Rice Short answer

Hello everyone! My question is about one of the short answers for Rice.

The prompt is “Rice is lauded for creating a collaborative atmosphere that enhances the quality of life for all members of our campus community. The Residential College System is heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What personal perspectives would you contribute to life at Rice?”

I have two different answers to this question and I am having an incredibly difficult time deciding which approach is better.
-Option 1: Starts with my childhood, growing up in a family of immigrants who were not always home to take care of me and my siblings. I talk about taking care of my great grandmother as a child, speaking to her in my native language and learning about India and my culture through her, as well as developing my character as a person.

-Option 2: I talk about Diwali (hindu cultural event) and how the swastika is used for decoration and its symbolic nature to hindus. I contrast this with the wretched nazi regime and how their flipping of the symbol made me cautious as a child. It motivated me to teach others about my religion and how important it is to share our cultural experiences. I talk about being appreciative about living in one of the most diverse cities in the country and how we still must be careful in today’s world whilst expressing religion.

I need guidance in choosing a response that fits the best and is what rice admissions what to see.

2nd one doesn’t appeal to me (I am an Indian parent BTW), I like the first one as it can show what you value, how you became a better person through attributes you experienced and learned from your grandmother, how to be independent, took initiative etc. etc. But make sure to connect how that would help you and more importantly that the same values you bring to Rice and live them at rice; and beyond. - My 2 cents.

I agree and prefer option 1. Show how you’d be a valuable addition to the Rice community.

Yes, option 1.

Option 2 sounds like something very unique!!
