We were able to submit SAT from CA (took test in March- one of the lucky few that was able to take it CA) We finally gave up as well because we were not willing to risk our lives to fly out to other states to take the test. Pretty crazy that many CA kids flew to Utah, Louisiana etc… to take the SAT.
Good luck to you - and supposedly they take what you mentioned into context - meaning 7 APs vs. what is offered…because you can’t take what isn’t offered.
For the record, when I graduated, the most APs anyone I know had one was - and I had none. So 7 - is way above my level
What other options is your daughter considering? Good luck to her.
Sorry to hear but i’m a strong believer in kids end up where they are meant to be.
99% certain here as well that it is SMU as well (vs. going out of state to UCSD which the pocketbook appreciates).
Best of luck!
My son applied/accepted to a lot of the same schools as you - getting cap’d at UT Austin was a bit of a change in plans for him - and after the Rice decline, he has decided to go to SMU over A&M, UCSD (and a few other schools). That will open up one spot off the engineering school at A&M for what it’s worth. Good luck!
Trying to think of waitlists as "we’d love to have you, but, damn, we just don’t have the space, instead of being put on the B list for a wedding and only getting invited after RSVPs roll in.
Totally. We booked tests as far away from us as Sacramento (we are in the Bay Area) but I drew the line at going out of state. Talk about an unfair privilege – it just felt wrong to me, so we gave up. In the end, the ones we booked that were 70-90 miles away cancelled too. Oh well! Fortunately he didn’t care that much about Rice. My husband was the one pushing it.
Same with us. Except it was my son’s counselor who suggested Rice and my son ended up applying there. He was, however, able to take the ACT and it worked out for him the very first time. If some of the other schools hadn’t worked out so far, then Rice would be another option. But he got waitlisted, and since he was accepted to one of his ‘dream’ schools, he doesn’t really care to be on Rice’s WL.
PS. I thought he was going to be rejected since he never uploaded the image!
Wow…those are great stats. I’m sure he will land at a great school.
He got WL and didn’t do the box. Wow. That answers that question.
Where will your son end up.
Wow! Really wow. I am continually amazed at scores and stats that get rejected or waitlisted. Just want to say you have an amazing young man and he will be a success wherever he goes. It is hard to see our kids work so hard and to get such unsatisfying results. GL to you and your S. Here’s to a bright future for him!
Congrats!!!
Thank you for the kind words. I am sure he’ll do well wherever he lands. But it is difficult, I think, for all these kids who’ve worked so hard to not be accepted where they’d hoped. (Not to mention, it’s hard on their parents too! )
I know, right? We were all wondering what would happen. Turns out it wasn’t an automatic rejection. I also found some info on Rice’s website in regards to the image. Doesn’t look like it’s required per se. If I can manage to attach a link here, I will try to find it.
He will most likely end up at UChicago.
U Chicago - that’s the equivalent. We’re going downward - way way down!!! But she’ll find the right fit. I mean, Rice was our ultra stretch - but honestly, even for an Ivy League type, I don’t think Rice is a target for anyone - it’s that type school - hence 36s with Straight As, Calc BC and great ECs get rejected.
I think Chicago’s acc. rate is a bit lower than Rice’s. RD was about 2%. My son had a 35ACT (one sitting), 14 AP’s (3 4’S, the rest 5’s), 4.0 UW/4.66 W, state awards/qualified for nat’l/int’l competitions, leadership roles, French silver medals, cum laude, swimmer, etc. yet, Rice waitlisted him. I don’t think it’s just about scores. I think they look at the whole app, hence the ‘holistic’ approach. I trust they know what they are doing.
Hang in there! She will def. find the right fit. Best of luck!
What I’ve heard about the highly competitive schools/scholarships/etc is that high grades and scores get you to the door, and everything else on the application may get you through the door. There are just no guarantees.
I got into Rice for music composition! 1340 SAT super-scored (highest were 720 RW and 620 M), homeschooled so no standard grading or APs, but I did take two AP exams in 9th grade which I didn’t submit because I got a 2 and a 3, dual enrolled for 3 years with straight A’s at UF. I was upset at Rice when I wrote my essays for the application because admissions was giving me some trouble as a home schooler trying to get the required rec letters, and there was poor communication, but I guess they did well enough. I got a full merit scholarship at Indiana University though so the need-based aid for Rice doesn’t really match it. Also got into UMich and FSU, but FSU gave almost no aid and UMich hasn’t sent financial aid notice yet.
Wow, fantastic options. I know IU is rated highly for music. Congrats to you.
I think it’s hard to compare AP numbers. At my daughters school it’s almost impossible to take more than 5. They don’t offer a lot and the way they do their scheduling makes it just not work. I assume Rice looked at her school profile and understood this since she was admitted 2 years ago.
D waitlisted… oh well-second in a row - NW and now Rice.
