Rice Class of 2017 ED/RD Discussion Thread

Just started Summer Vacation a week ago, and that means TIME TO START THE APPLICATION PROCESS!!! :)
I've seen a few other colleges with threads for the Class of 2017 so I decided, why not make one for Rice.
I'm going to be applying to either Wiess (natural sciences) or Brown (engineering) ED. I'm extremely excited to get to apply, and probably too excited as I've been checking the Rice thread in my free time if I run out of things to do (which is too many times a day).
Anyways, I'm really excited to get to know some other applicants, so who else is for sure applying?

I’m applying ED. Probably to Brown for EE. Little worried because I feel like my stats aren’t the best.

Well, ED will help a little with that. Should we post basic stats? I don’t feel like typing it all right now but:

-33 on the ACT
-Bio (m): 750 and APUSH: 760
-Hardest schedule possible, around 9 or 10 APs total
-President of 2 clubs, one is really active, one isn’t
-Play sports all three seasons
-No hook or anything though, I’ve showed a passion for the environment (I’m the president of the club and I wrote my essay on how I became passionate about it) so hopefully that will help.

I wouldn’t sweat it too much, Rice is holistic so your test score is only a small part of the overall picture.

edit: I can’t write anything right now, too tired. I tried editing the mess of a thing I just wrote but it’s still pretty incoherent. Sorry.

I think I’m applying ED to Rice. It has all the things I want in a college: location, academics, good food…haha. I’m prolly applying as either a history, theatre, or political science major.

I recently retook the ACT; anxiously awaiting results. I got a 30 last year, but obviously it wouldn’t hurt to get a few more points.

I know right, it seems perfect. At first I only was thinking about Rice because of the location, I wanted to go to school in a warm place. Then I started looking at it more it and got even better. Great in Math and Science. Residential Colleges. Amazing student body. #1 in quality of life a bunch of times.

Also, I wouldn’t stress too much about the ACT, if you got a 30 last year, and you’ve had a whole year to improve you’ll probably be a few points higher. When do you find out anyway? I’ve only taken it once, but I’ll taken it again at the beginning of the school year just to see what happens. Also, I have to take Math II because I want to be a Math Major.

Mhm. I visited Rice recently, and gosh, it was so beautiful that I was automatically sold on the college. I especially like the small student body, and how the campus itself seems to be its own little village. It’s gorgeous. Of course, appearance isn’t the greatest factor, but just walking along the buildings made me feel at home. I can definitely see myself going to school at Rice.

Yeah, I’m expecting at least a 33 or 34. It was a lot easier for me than last year, so it wasn’t as stressful. I’ll know my score at around June 25th. I also have AP scores coming up in the third week of July, and they’re making me doubly anxious, lol.

I’m nervous about APs, but only a little, since they don’t affect college admissions. I took APUSH, AP Bio, and AP Lit.
APUSH: I thought I did really well, and am expecting a 5.
AP Bio: My best class, and I thought going into it that I would definitely get a 5. Only 66% of multiple choice were necessary, and I could get around 80%. Then when I took the test I got extremely unlucky with the essays. Actually it was probably the worse set of essays possible. I didn’t know any of them completely so I’m worried I’ll get a 4.
AP Lit: Well, I suck at english. Hoping for a 4, but I could have gotten a 3.

Also, did you do an overnight? and if so can you tell me about it. I want to do one but I’m nervous about it.

really want to apply ED, but i have not visited, nor do i think i will be able to because of expenses. i also don’t want to be accepted and be locked in if the financial aid isn’t enough, so i think it’s RD for me.

i hope i’ll have a chance through essays and such, because i had weak grades freshman/sophomore year and am currently awaiting sat scores. i want to study cognitive science and linguistics, and hopefully my psycholinguistics research this summer will help me out. so nervous…

@stresswaves, I’ve heard that the essay is pretty important at Rice and actually can make a difference… another reason why I need to stop procrastinating and actually work on it. So far I have a draft done of the common app essay, but I feel like there is still something missing that I need to add.

I really want to start working on my Rice essays, anyone know if they’re staying the same?

Also, I haven’t visited yet either, but I’ve done A LOT of research on Rice, and I’ll have a chance to visit before ED so that’s good.

I’ve also heard of the importance of the essay, runallday4. It’s a good thing, considering I love writing essays. I should begin writing my Rice essays; I’ve already started with the Gates Millennium Scholarship prompts.

I suspect that they will use the same questions for their application (see below). I think question #3 is the most important. My son spent the most time with his draft(s) on this question. He also answered question #2 in a unique way.

With the understanding that the choice of academic school you indicated is not binding, explain why you are applying to that particular school of study.

What motivated you to apply to Rice University? Please be specific and limit your response to 200 words.

The quality of Rice’s academic life and the Residential College System are heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice? (Most applicants are able to respond successfully in two to three double-spaced pages.)

Thanks, I’m just going to get started on them, and hope that they’re the same, which seems likely. For #1 does it actually mean school, and not major? Like why engineering? or why natural science?

School, not major. My son wants to major in chemistry as pre-med so he described his desire to be in the school of natural science.

Overnight visits are amazing. The hosts are awesome. Most people end up really enjoying them. Being nervous/feeling awkward at first is common, but basically everyone gets over it pretty quickly once they actually meet their hosts.

I strongly recommend doing an overnight visit–it’s a great way to get a feel for the campus, culture, and students. I did an overnight visit during Owl Days (which is a program for admitted students in the spring) and found it extremely helpful in deciding where to go.

Also, for the record, those three supplement questions are the same as when I applied. I doubt they’ll change in August.

There’s actually a slim chance I might be able to visit Houston this summer and I’m praying that I will be able to.

Since the beginning of my college search I wanted a school that had 4 seasons and cool weather, so it’s surprising that through research I found my top choice…in Texas. I really hope I can visit and get a feel for the campus

I’m definitely looking to apply ED to Rice for the Class of 2017. It’s been my dream since I visited two years ago to attend Rice. I would be applying to the Engineering School probably as BME.

I’m planning on applying ED to Brown for engineering (probably chem). I actually live in Houston, about 20 miles from campus and naturally I’ve been there many times :stuck_out_tongue: It’s just a beautiful place in a wonderful city. You really can’t go wrong.

Are you guys planning on doing the interview? And if so, on campus or off campus?

I think I’m going to do one, I just hope I don’t get asked any really obscure questions.

I’m going on campus, but that’s cause I live there. I’ve heard that if you’re passionate about going there and are good at making small talk you’ll be fine

Now that I’m done with all the craziness that is college visits I can finally start working on my supplement essays. The ironic thing is Rice is the only school that I’ll be visiting that I haven’t been to yet. So is life I guess. Anyways, I haven’t actually started the whole essay yet, but I have a word document open with all the questions and I just type any thoughts I have so that in a few days I can look them all over and have a good idea of what to write. The only one I’m holding off on is my why Rice essay. I’ll do that one after I visit.
