Rice University

I was wondering if Rice's writing programs are nearly as strong as their science and engineering programs. Rice seems perfect for me in every way-- it's diverse, has study abroad in 34 countries, has small classes, has top academics, is right in the city + there are no frats/sororities... but I want to be a journalist (not necessarily major in it, as an undergrad, though) + so I'm not sure if it's the best place for me. Can anyone help me with this?

Well, I'll declare now that I'm a fellow fan of Rice, so I'm clearly bias, but I understand that Rice is actually strong across the board. In the humanities, they seem to be doing especially well in history, philosophy, and English, and maybe poli sci, too. There isn't any journalism major that I can see.

If it's simply writing you care about, then you can certainly do well at Rice. Take a look at the "notable alumni" from Rice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rice_University_people The most famous writer/author I know of on the list is Larry McMurty. There are several magazine authors and journalist types, so I imganine you'd do fine.

I think you can definitely do very well with a non-science/engineering degree from Rice. One of the great things about the school is that it is very strong in many areas, which allows a person to explore multiple fields and find something that they really enjoy. All of the academic majors I know at Rice seem very happy with their classes and professors.
