While I like Rice better socially, it seems that academically there is just no comparison between Rice and NU's respective economic departments nor their business schools. Do you guys think it's worth it to pick a school for their strength in a major/department?

The majority of college students change their majors- many more than once. Both are excellent schools, but I believe Rice offers about the best college experience that one can get- besides, there’s the weather thing.

NU and Chicago.

"Do you guys think it’s worth it to pick a school for their strength in a major/department? "
—That depends on how certain you are of your interests, really. If you know it’ll definitely be business, then you should seriously consider strength in the business department. Rice is more famous for engineering, I heard.

I think NU will get you to better places. Where do you plan to work?

While Rice is not known as a “business school”, the economics department is strong and the overall education is suberb. I don’t agree that “NU will get you to better places.” Wonderwhy is not speaking with much knowledge but based on “I heard”. Yes, Rice is strong in engineering. It also has a conservatory-level music school and an incredible pre-med program. I am not knocking NU, but many on this forum really don’t know much about Rice and dismiss it because they don’t think they like Houston.

That’s why I added the phrase “I heard”. =)

And I have nothing against Houston or Rice; I meant that NU’s Economics department is excellent not to mention widely recognized. HOWEVER, roflc0pter, note that their Business School (Kellogg) is graduate level. They offer a special program for juniors and seniors, though.

BTW, I have a friend at Rice. She’s in Engineering and loves it there.
