any thoughts? I want to major in either english or philosophy btw...
also thought it kinda weird that stanford is being considerably more generous with the fin aid package than rice, but costs will be roughly the same if travel is included (since i live fairly close to rice in comparison to stanford)

Which location do you like better? Do you like the college system at Rice? At which one do you have more loans or self-help aid? Just some things I would consider.

my question is what do you intend to do with an english or philosophy degree?

but i think the most important thing is name recognition in the geographic area in which you wish to work.

If you want to focus on analytic philosophy, Stanford is the best choice; for continental philosophy, I would suggest Rice.

mjoe,

im not really sure at this point what exactly i want to do career-wise, but i love english lit and philosophy; i don't know why, but i just have this "learning for the sake of learning" attitude toward these subjects, naive though it may be. am considering a career in journalism perhaps...

nspeds, thanks for the suggestion. im def more into continental phil...

Then in terms of department, Rice would be a better choice; Tristram Englehardt is an outstanding scholar in continental philosophy. Stanford's program is known for its focus on mathematical logic. They even have their own press for publishing logic texts.

san fran is a great city, better than houston in my opinion...but stanford isn't IN san francisco like rice is IN houston. palo alto has some nice restaurants, the stanford mall- which most college students can't afford, a lot of middle class families who work in silicon valley. Stanford is significantly larger than Rice and has much better name recognition, especially in the northeast.

Why would you be surprised that Stanford gives better financial aid? They just finished a campaign that raised about a billion dollars to be spent on undergraduates (includes financial aid).

i was always under the impression that rice was alot cheaper than the other top tier schools...i wasnt aware about stanford's campaign...thanks for the info though

Look at your bottom line costs, not the amount of financial aid you get from any school. What matters is what you pay, not what you "save". Go with the school that you feel best about.

I would choose Rice because it is smaller and I like a small school and the lifestyle there.

even though i go to rice, i would choose stanford because of their far far better cs program and their major called symbolic systems which blows our BA in cog sci out of the water.

My son, who goes to Rice, is in Computer Science and adores it, told me that a prof who had been at Stanford and then at Rice, told him that Rice is Stanford, "without the atitude".

Do many people transfer from Rice to Stanford grad school, and is rice respected on the west coast?

yes i would say Rice it is respected. when i was at rice for vision i met a cornell transfer and a stanford transfer. they said they liked rice more.

I met a senior last night who is going to Stanford for grad school next year. She said when she visited her impression was "this is Rice with more people."

was that a senior from rice?

Yes, I'm sorry. I'm a Rice freshman. :)

sweet. do you know a B Mothersole or a B Anteley?

I know who B Mothersole is, but I've never spoken to him that I can recall. Don't know Antley.

Rice is small, but you don't know EVERYONE ;)
