Oh my gosh! I went to both of those events! I live on the campus, so I am always checking the boards for events. Lectures are all over the place, but the Latke-Hamantash Debate really is the best; Mandel Hall was packed with people. It was quite funny how the professors in the debate took things utterly seriously to make their points.

Other great events on campus are the Folk Festival (which was last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and the International Festival (which is held sometime in the spring at I-House).

Although my daughter had a wonderful education and experience at Chicago, I did not like the academic quarter system that Chicago was on. Her fall classes did not begin till nearly Ocober and she did not finish for the academic year until mid June. I thought that put her at a disadvantage for summer employment.

That was one reasons my DD chose Rice over Carleton. Carleton has a schedule similar to UC, and our Texas schools start in mid-August. It was really out-of-sync with jobs and friends around here.
Back to the OP... I might have missed this... do you want a core curriculum like UC, or would you like to have more flexibility like at Rice? There are cool things that come with a core... everyone has a shared educational experience to discuss, you get a good strong liberal arts background... but it is not for everyone.
