Rice vs. Cornell vs. UCLA (Environmental Engineering)

Hi All,

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been accepted to 3 great engineering programs and I’m hoping you could give me feedback or help me think of things to consider when deciding between these colleges and their environmental engineering programs?

I’m strongly considering each school and could use some push/pull in one direction or another. I love Cornell because of the distance from home (I’m from Southern California) and the name recognition it has. Rice is great because of the relatively small size and beautiful campus (it’s also a good distance from home). UCLA has a gorgeous campus, great weather, and my parents are both alums. I mention the somewhat superficial reasons I like these schools because I feel I can’t go wrong with the engineering programs and education I would get at these 3 universities.

Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

I don’t know much about environmental engineering in these three school. But seriously, for comparison between schools at this level (assuming they both have a equally strong program in your major as their overall ranking), if money is not a problem, it is really just a question on how you like the school. All of them are already schools at the very top, and whichever one should be able to give you a fantastic education. So really, you need to ask yourself where and how you want to spend the next four years of your life.

I guess you can start off by asking whether you want to be in a big school or a small one, as the size of these three school differ so much.

@nebhar97‌ How were you admitted to all three of these schools when Rice has not released RD yet and their ED was restrictive, which they strongly enforce? Cornell hasn’t released RDs yet.
Are their financial considerations? Does cold, snowy weather matter to you? Rice has good weather, very hot in summer, when you are not in classes. UCLA has how many thousands of students compared to Cornell and Rice? Do you want to freeze all winter, do you want to be near your family, or do you want to live in a nice climate away from family?

Hi @bordertexan‌. I received likely letters/early writes from all 3 schools. I was also flown out to Rice for their Vision program and Cornell is flying me out to Ithaca in April.

Luckily cost won’t be a factor for me, so I can decide solely based on how much I enjoy the campus and program. Rice is SUPER appealing because it’s not too far away from home, I loved their engineering courses I sat in on, and the size is definitely a plus.

Cornell has a great reputation and spending four years in upstate New York is a bit exciting to me. Obviously I’ll get a much better feel once I visit.

Things just got a bit more complicated as I was just accepted to USC’s engineering program today. I’d probably rank them a tad bit higher than UCLA in terms of personal preference.

@nebhar97 I’d put Rice and Cornell above both the CA schools.
