Rice vs UNC vs Duke

Really excited got offers from Rice, Duke and UNC. Leaning heavily towards UNC because of scholarships. But assuming there wasn’t, I am trying to figure out if Rice worth the consideration. How well recognized in Rice?? I would assume that the average person is more likely to know Duke or UNC than they would know Rice. I am interested in studying business but Rice’s business program ranks way below Duke & UNC. What is the bank recruiting like at Rice?

Where are you interested in working? All three are excellent schools.

Rice doesn’t have a business major, so as much as I love it here, the program is definitely inferior. I can’t speak to bank recruiting really.

Interested in Ibanking/finance. If banks don’t recruit at Rice what kind of industries are interested in Rice graduates?

When I was at Rice, all of the major banks and consulting firms recruited there. Call career services and check on the latest rather than general comments on cc. I would be interested in knowing the answer too!

Here’s a list of the companies from this semester’s career fair: https://rice-csm.symplicity.com/events/students.php?mode=list&cf=2015SpringExpo

I’m deciding between Duke, Rice, and Notre Dame. Visit Duke if you can. I just did these past two days, and absolutely hated it. Forget rankings, it just seemed like a terrible place to be.

“Seemed like a terrible place to be” Are you sure you visited Duke, @silverdrop ?

@StanManYeah Yes, I just got back from Blue Devil Days. It just didn’t seem to fit what I was looking for. The academics, from what I saw, seemed superb. The food was also very good. But everything else was lacking in regard to my personal expectations. Off the top of my head, some of the negatives I encountered were:

  • The three-campus system/needing to take a bus between campuses was not appealing to me at all.
  • The overall layout of West Campus seemed a bit disorganized.
  • Central Campus looked like it was straight out of the 1960s.
  • The maintenance of the grounds appeared to be lacking, especially up by the sociology building.
  • Lack of social cohesion, except for basketball.
  • Overall attitude of the students I met with. I just didn’t seem to share the same set of morals and goals with them/gel with them. Some of them were (in my opinion) unnecessarily arrogant.
  • Lack of a visible minority population while walking around campus. It seemed to be mostly whites and Asians.
  • I’m not into Greek life, which seemed to, from what I was told, have a strong presence on campus.
  • Housing after freshman year seems really random.

Overall, Duke might be a great place for some people, and I do not want to take away from the positive experiences others have had, but I found out that Duke was simply not for me.

@jfking01 interesting list. But does this reflect all of the companies that interview? Bain, BCG, McKinsey and all of the major investment banks used to interview on campus. Is this not the case anymore? I would be surprised as Rice graduates historically have done very well at these firms, and this is coming from someone who has a lot of industry knowledge about these areas.

Some of those are valid criticisms…but Duke is a very diverse place and I don’t think we are any more or less arrogant than students at peer institutions. At any rate, though, calling it “terrible” is a little extreme. Just wasn’t your personal fit. Hope you find a school that works for you!

@Faulkner1897 I have absolutely no idea. I know that for CS it’s the case that not every company that recruits is at the career fair. You could maybe find more recruiting info at http://ccd.rice.edu/home/ but I don’t know. Or you could email an economics professor or something.
