Texas or California
Los Angeles or Houston
Challenging Urban Area (USC) or Upscale Urban Area (Rice)
Rice is less expensive than USC</p>
<p>I am from Houston and despite its bad rap, I like it --except weather.<br>
I cant see that much difference between the school on an impersonal basis... then it would come down to specific profs.; dorms ...Cos</p>

<p>I've heard & read good things about both schools. Both are quire different, but both are pretty selective and expensive. Rice has you live on campus for up to 4 years while at USC you have to enter the housing lottery after your freshman year (I believe). If my kid were interested in these schools, I'd probably suggest he apply to both & choose AFTER he gets accepted. Both sometimes give nice merit aid as well.
