Out of a scale from 1 to 10, how cutthroat an competitive are they compared to each other? By that I mean cutthroat in which students won't help each other out in order to get a better grade and get the A instead of their peers.

I can’t speak for the other schools, but Rice is very collaborative. I constantly had study groups for various classes. There is natural competition to be the best, but people are always willing to help each other.

It would also depend on the program or department. I would imagine JHU and Rice have more rigorous and competitive programs for engineering, JHU for biomed/bioengineering (and stuff like that) and WashingtonU@StL for business/finance.

Based entirely on rumors (lol), Washington is very collaborative and the professors are genuinely helpful to their students. JHU is more of for highly independent, strong headed, matured students.

I am majoring in Biology/Chemistry and will be going the Pre-med track…

JHU is know for being competitive and cutthroat especially among pre-meds. I’m not sure how true its reputation is, but it has been discussed a lot on this website and many others.

…and there are many other threads lol. Just search around.

Thank you collegiate! Do you know if any if these schools weed out Pre-meds in the pre med courses to boost their med-school acceptance percentage?

^^^ All those 3 schools do. I’m certain Rice does that, and so does Dartmouth. Generally, all privates do that. Only mostly State U or public schools that do not do that.

Is it something to be taken into account? How should I go about considering this?

I think JHU is the most competitive

That was my thought as well…

Do a search here on CC for threads with pre-med or medical school. There is lots of excellent advice there for students who are pre-med. One of the rules of thumb (right after ‘don’t incur a lot of debt’) is to choose a school where are you likely to be at the top of the class academically. If you are at a highly selective school, even one that doesn’t aggressively weed and is known for cooperative students, your GPA may take a fatal hit. Look for schools were you are at the top based on your current GPA and, especially, your test scores.
