Rice's name in the Northeast

I'm trying to decide between Rice and Johns Hopkins. I live in Massachusetts. What kind of name does Rice have outside of the South? - because even if I do go to Rice, I don't plan on setting in Texas.

And in general, which is a better school for engineering?

Thanks in advance...

Rice is less known in the northeast.

Heck, im choosing between NYU and Rice, and everyone starts drooling when they hear that i got into NYU (which i was confident about to begin with) and they have no clue that rice isnt something you eat with beans.

Rice has good name recognition with grad schools and employers, particularly in sciences, architecture, music and engineering. The general public thinks it an agricultural school or something. But whatever, we all know it's awesome.

Nobody knows Rice here in CT, unless you have family in Texas. The first response I got when I said I applied was, "isn't that a Black school?"

Solar: Among those who know something about undergraduate education, Rice's reputation is as good as any, including the best in the Northeast. You should not be too concerned about the opinions of people who are uninformed. If you want an informed opinion about Rice, talk to someone at Johns Hopkins' med school or its graduate school of biomedical engineering.

that's a good idea wubudong. Actually that's the best advice yet. Who cares if no one else has heard of Rice, it should only matter to you and grad schools/companies

Thanks for the input everybody. Yes, I agree wobudong - I only care about employers and grad schools. I think I'll follow up on your idea.
