Richard Louie Memorial Internship for High School Students of Asian Descent

The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the national museums of Asian art at the Smithsonian Institution, offer a paid internship for high school students of Asian descent. The Richard Louie Memorial Internship was established in 1994 to honor Richard Louie, former associate director of the Freer and Sackler, and is made possible by funds donated through the Richard Louie Memorial Fund. Its goal is to offer practical experience in a museum setting to young people of Asian descent.

Interns are provided with opportunities to accomplish a specific independent project. In addition, the Freer and Sackler staff makes every effort to include interns in ongoing public and behind-the-scenes museum activities.

A stipend of $1500 is awarded to interns upon the successful completion of a two hundred-hour internship experience. The minimum of two hundred internship hours must be completed within the span of one year. Since their schedules are flexible and unique to each project, interns arrange their schedules in consultation with their supervisors. No housing or transportation is provided.

Interns are selected by the staff of the museums’ participating departments. Applicants should indicate three departments of interest: Administration/Finance/Human Resources; Archives; Conservation and Scientific Research; Collections Management (Registrar); Curatorial; Education and Public Programs; Exhibition Management; Information Technology; Publications; Design and Production; Library; Membership and Development; Photography; Public Affairs and Marketing; Rights and Reproductions; and Museum Shops.

Did anyone else apply this year?

I applied  I love art and this seemed like such a cool experience! I’m so nervous right now I have no idea when they’ll be telling us whether we’re accepted or not =/

medamon, I PM’d you.

Bumpity Bump Bump. Did anyone else apply?

Did either of you guys make it in? I’m applying this year, and I don’t know if it’s difficult or not to be accepted. The program coordinator at my high school says that our school has had a good history of kids getting in, but I don’t have a perfect GPA and I’m worried that’s going to hurt my chances.

I applied! the thing is, I don’t live in the D.C. area… any suggestions?

I think this internship isnt residential so youll have to figure out a way to drive there every morning or something like that. Do you have any friends or relatives in the area?

I don’t think I know anybody in the area. Know a good place to start?

Did you guys receive your replies yet?

Hi! Could you guys let me know if you would recommend this to a junior interested in photography? (I’m thinking about applying, and I do live in the DC area)

Hello! I know this hasn’t been updated since February, but I applied for this internship a month ago and I was just curious when they’ll announce the acceptances.

I think selected interns will be notified by May 1st. Probably means that those who aren’t accepted won’t get a notification
