My DS got several OV invitations. He would like to narrow down to three schools due to the heavy school workload in senor years like the other swimmers.
Dilemma is we are not so sure which school is within his reach or safety. If he just chooses the schools he would like to go, he is afraid that he might be ended with empty hands in the end without any offers.
Is it a good idea to ask coaches where DS is in his list and how much possibility DS has for an offer for a spot before he accept the OV?
Can we expect honest answers from the coaches at this point of time?

I made a mistake on spelling on thread title. No idea how to fix it.

You should definitely ask. The coaches ask where they stand on the athletes’ list all the time. If you are talking about the HYP swim coaches, I believe they would be pretty honest with you.

Definitely time to ask. Simply say, “we are going to limit the amount of OV I take due to a heavy school workload. Can you tell me where I stand on your list of recruits?” Once you have OV offers, its time to ask some hard questions of the coaches. Note–a lot of swimmers accept 3-4 visits rather than the 5 maximum. Our D went on four, first was a bust, second was great, third was the perfect fit and the week before the 4th we called the coach and told them that she had made a decision, and that we did not want him to spend his money on flying her out. He was not thrilled that she did not come, but since she had no intention of attending his school, he appreciated her not wasting his time/money. Some other swimmers found “their school” early in the process, yet did all of their visits because they felt they had to do so. 3 visits is a good amount. These visits are fun, yet tiring and time consuming.

If coaches say you are in top three, we can see obviously he has a good shot. The schools he wants to go , for example, say you are on top 10, 15, or 20, how far should he risk his chances? How much chance does he have from OV? considering multiple kids are going multiple OVs within Ivies?

At this point in the process, coaches have their list of recruits - but they really don’t know how many of those they’ll be able to land. If you’re not in the top 3 or so, I think the response will probably be something like, ‘we are very serious about recruiting you, that’s why we’re bringing you out for an official’.

I don’t think you’ll have coach tell you, ‘eh, you’re about 15th down the list’ - they want to keep everyone in play until they have a better idea of which recruits they’ll be able to get.
