Rigor of Mathematics Major v. Bioengineering Major

Hey y’all! So I’m just wondering about the rigor/in-depthness/challenging aspect of the mathematics major at UT Dallas. I’m also considering a bioengineering major and because both sound cool I want to pick the one where I will learn the most and which will be the most challenging. I’m also hoping to be on the pre-med track. Thanks everyone!

So after extensive research I will answer my own question to anyone who is wondering the same thing: The Bioengineering department is up-and-coming at UT Dallas as they are in the process of building NSERL 2 (Some huge labs for bioengineering and other sciences). I was told by multiple people that the math department was not very strong but that soon the bioengineering will be UT Dallas’s #1 respected major. The math department is a third theoretical math, a third statistics, and then a third blended theoretical math and statistics called “mathematical sciences.” As I am more interested in applied math than anything, I am currently looking into mathematics with an engineering twist at another university. UT Dallas is a great school though for engineering, and I highly recommend it!

Yes, BMEN is a new and very challenging major. A lot of biology students will frustrated that this major has little requirement of biology. In fact, you only have to take 1 physiology class as a major requirement. This program has high amount of electrical engineering. Fail rate is high, and since it’s a new major, it means 1 year behind if you fail a class.
