since there's not much on information anywhere about it, i decided to turn here for some information. my question is: has anyone here had experience with RISD's pre-college program SPECIFICALLY THEIR FURNITURE DESIGN MAJOR? i have perused the net and found almost nothing since its not as popular a major as say animation, illustration, or architecture. any help would be greatly appreciated!

their furniture design major is exceptional

You’re right, the main reason there is not too much info available is because Furniture Design is one of RISD’s smaller departments (around 60 undergraduates and 15 - 20 graduate students). Up until about 7 or 8 years ago, furniture design was not a separate department at RISD but was just part of the Industrial Design Dept., and many RISD students interested in furniture design still go with the ID major instead just to keep their options open.

As for RISD’s pre-college program, most of the comments you see will apply to all of the majors. Remember that you will spend only 2 days a week in the studio for the furniture design major. The remainder of the week will be spent on the common classes that every pre-college student – regardless of major – must take: foundation drawing and basic design studios and art history.

By the way, my son attended the 2004 RISD pre-college program. It was a wonderful experience for him and he got a lot out of it. He graduated from RISD this past May as an ID major – although his main interest on furniture design (specifically, chairs)! :)
