Hello, I've got accepted in Industrial Design program from both colleges and I'm having a hard time to decide which design school i should choose to go...

Does anybody know well about both schools??

I'm leaning more towards to pratt because it's located really closed to the city and I heard from my friends who goes there, that I'll have more chances of getting an internship.
Also, I love living close or in the city so pratt would be my best fit. Since, I dont have U.S. citizenship, I really want to get a job in NYC after or while attending Pratt and get a green card or a citizenship.

But I also heard that RISD is a great school for industrial design too and after graduating from RISD, I'll surly have a great job opportunities.

Sounds like you like Pratt.
But for what it is worth RISD is a great place to study ID. You will be so busy during the school year that you won’t be able to do internships until summer (or maybe during winter session) at either place anyway. RISD students get summer internships all over the country in the summer - so no problem there.
You should go where the money makes sense and where you will be the happiest.

ugh… So do you think RISD will be the best place to study ID? Do you know any benefits if I study at Pratt?? RISD’s name value and it’s program is more higher than pratt’s??

Pratt is a good program to choose if you have any interest in housewares and furniture design. Those things are covered at RISD but it is my impression that they are a specialty at Pratt. At RISD furniture is its own separate department.

It is not going to do you any good to obsess over name value in this situation. It is an end game. You should be asking yourself where you will be happiest and the most inspired. Have you not visited either place? Do you know much more than what you have heard from others and websites? Sorry to be so harsh but I’m getting really tired of the “name value” trope here on CC. And I never said RISD was the best place to study ID. Life and your career are what YOU make of it. Both RISD and Pratt would be great platforms to grow from. In fact I say do RISD a service and stay away if the only reason you value it is that it has a good name.

No you can be harsh on me cause I really need a help. I’ve only been to Pratt once in this spring break. It was not an official tour from Pratt but my pratt friends guided me. Few hours of touring was not extremely helpful but I kind of got a view of pratt. Yes, I think you’re really right on the saying that it’s my life and my career that I make of it. But this is really hard… I know… I should have had a tour to RISD before choosing…
I think I’ll be really happy if I go to pratt and live in the city and be with my girlfriend. But I’m curious towards risd because of those others who say RISD has better ID program than pratt. I know it will help me a bit if I take a tour at RISD… and I know that it’s my life not other people’s life and I know that I’ll be going to the college that I choose not them. I know it’s hard to have the hundred percent of confidence in choices like this. Maybe I’m just wanting help to be not stressed about this for a moment and listen to other people’s opinions. By the way my art teacher says if i dont receive any scholarships from pratt, he told me it would be better for me to go to RISD instead of pratt… he didn’t tell me any reasons behind this… ugh…

thank you drae27, if you have any more things to say please do and sorry if my sentence and grammar were off…

osubang…Please tell us what you are interested in. What inspires you? What to do you want to explore if you study ID? Maybe that will help make things clearer for you. There are many different paths you can take with an ID degree.

Both Pratt and RISD will require you to take a foundation year where you will take basic art courses, Drawing, 2D, 3D, Art History, Writing and some electives. Then you will enter your major in the second year. Is there any chance you would change your mind and major in something else besides ID?

I understand what your art teacher is saying aout the money…if everything is equal, and they could afford it, most people would choose RISD. The reason people are saying that RISD is a better choice is that it is harder to get accepted and tends to have very focused students with an incredible work ethic. Because of that employers tend give serious consideration to people who graduate from there. But Pratt is a fine school and very highly regarded for Industrial Design. And if your portfolio is strong the opportunities will be there for you. And your friends are right…there are many internship possibilities right in NY so it could be likely that you wouldn’t need to leave NYC to get work experience. If you have friends and a girlfriend there already, it sounds like you will be happier.

Industrial Design programs are very rigorous with a lot of late nights and deadlines. Anything you can do to make your life warm and friendly while you are going through that is going to make you healthier. And if you are healthy your work will be better. That is the mom in me speaking.

Everything inspires me. People, city, my parents, cars, ideas, and my gf.
Thank you so much drae27! You are truly helpful!! Thank you!!!
Hopefully future me in 2018 will be happy with my choice that I’m gonna make very soon.

I wish I could meet the 2018 you and see where you are too!! Good luck no matter what you choose. Check in and keep us posted on how you are doing.

hi drae27…
i’m trying to convince my parents to let me go to pratt but theyre not letting me go… sorry i forgot to tell you this but i’m from south korea so i’m attending schools in U.S. with my student visa. since i’m a foreigner, my parents think that i have higher percentage to be hired if i graduated from risd. and they think risd has more name value in korea and usa. i’m telling the benefits of me going to pratt but… theyre going hard on this… and i havent told my parents that i have a gf… bc they’ll think she’d be my only reason for me to go yo pratt… ugh… sorry… i just wanted to blast this off bc right now my gf is in a bad mood bc i might live away from her…

Oh Osubang. They are your parents and they are paying so…
maybe this is destiny working it’s hand.
There are very affordable buses that run between Providence and NY. Peter Pan Buses. You will be able to see your gf. My son is in his 3rd year at RISD and his gf has been living in NY the whole time and they are still together!!!
Glad to be your ear if you need to vent…let it out!!!
I will PM you when I can.
Keep the faith…RISD is a great school. It’s all good. Remember that!!!

Drae gives good advice. My D started MCAD in Minnesota and her bf was in Florida for a couple of years, they saw each other Christmas and summers. When he found himself having to find his own apartment, he moved up there and in with her, and they are still together.

Hello it’s me! I’ve decided to attend RISD. In fact, I’m just two days away from taking an airplane to RI where I’ll start my first year. I’ve heard foundation year at RISD comes with a lot of workloads… but I’ll survive… somehow. Me and my gf decided to be a friend, it’s a sad story but it will wash away gradually. Thank you drae27!! and redbug119!! Me of April 2013 was having a hard time whether which college to decide but it was nothing as I look back on it now. thank you.

Osubang!!! Congratulations!!!
By now you are in Providence. I am sorry to hear about the gf but I am very happy for you in the bigger picture. It will be a lot of work but you will learn and grow soooo much.
Best of luck!!!
