I am thinking of applying to both schools for an undergraduate's degree in apparel design. I already have a degree in graphic design but I'm also passionate about fashion, so I'm wondering if they would accept me as a transfer...

Has anyone visited Parsons? I visited RISD once and I really loved it. I thought the area was very green and beautiful (and it's a plus that Brown's university is close-by). I am just wondering if it would be practical to study there if students will be required to travel to NYC more often for internships and such.

I would really appreciate to have your opinion about both schools in terms of education/location/friendliness and overall if the program is worth pursuing (if you studied it!)

Thank you so much!!

p.s.: I did read the other thread comparing both schools but am curious if there are any updates ever since.

pups, both RISD and Parsons are well respected in the apparel biz. Parsons has the edge (along with FIT) because of its proximity to many hiring companies and accessibility to famous industry figures. RISD is farther away, but still manages to do all right in finding jobs and internships. Alums often hire from their alma maters.

Although New York is unquestionably the center of the universe for fashion, quite a few successful brands – retail and wholesale – are located in other parts of the country, so be open minded on when you look for jobs and internships.

PS, If you already have a degree in graphic design, you may not need to get a second degree in fashion design. You just need to get your foot in the door in a design studio. A lot depends on your portfolio, your prior experience and your fashion savvy – your taste level, how you present yourself, how you talk the talk, your understanding of whatever brand it is you’re targeting.

I am an international applicant from India with 4 yrs bachelors degree in fashion design and masters from milan in fashion styling.

Now I have applied for graduate fashion Design programmes in usa…Starting Fall 2012.

I have recieved confirmation for admission from the below

Savannah school of fashion and design, with scholarship in fashion n Design - 2yrs progm

Academy of Art University, SF - 3yrs program in Fashion Design.

Now Im extremely confused which one to go for.

Im looking at job prospects, placements and internships after my graduation and also overall ratings of the university…

I want to make the correct choice for myself…

I really want to work and use the skills learned after investing huge amount of money in USA…

But not getting clarity on which one would suit it the best. Need expert advise and guidance…

Yes Angell…I agree with momrath. You do have enough training. Are there any studios in NY that can help you get a work visa to come here? If as she says, it is about getting a student visa to get here and get your foot in the door, then I suggest starting over and applying to any program at FIT. You will be in NY and can get internships. If you are dead set on following your current plan…choose the school that is cheapest over all the years combined - hopefully that is SCAD since it is also the shortest program. Why do three years more when you can be out and working sooner?
