Any suggestions/ thoughts on Syracuse and RISD?
My D has been accepted at both, interested in either fashion design or illustration. She wants to keep going with classical music on the side.
What about:
1) quality of art training at each
2) reputation of degree
3) opportunities for other academics and music at SU and at Brown/RISD

Being from Midwest, I do not know much about Syracuse.
RISD is a great place, my daughter had a pre-college program there, and she liked it a lot. RISD does have your #1 and #2 - high quality of art training and great reputation.
As for taking courses in Brown, I do not know yet. According to RISD site, it is quite possible, but they recommend it after the freshman year. I asked a question about it in some other thread here, but did not get a reply so far...8-(

D is finishing her freshman year at RISD and will be an illustration major - loves it. BTW - RISD is well known for illustration. She is also very into middle ages so has taken some of her liberal arts offerings along those lines. Quality of teaching and intensity of the program are excellent, degree reputation is first rate and they have many grads come back to speak to students -eg last night was the assistant director for the Corpse Bride movie.

As for music - all kinds of RISD kids do music on the side , and Brown has groups as well. RISD kids have full access to Brown facilities and courses ( thouh tough to do them first year) most do soem threafter. Check out the Brown offerings too.

Also proximity to NY and Bostn for trips. HTH

RISD. Definitely.

My personal experience -- Visited Syracuse and did not like it at all. Went to RISD Pre-College program last summer and had the time of my life.

Sorry I'm a girl of few words at the moment. I might make a more detailed post later.

RISD, no doubt, for either fashion design or illustration.

As for "Brown/RISD", that's a very tough combo to arrange, especially for Freshmen or Sophomores, since the two schools are operating on different term schedules.

My DD graduated from RISD (majored in industrial design). There is no flex or time to take courses at Brown during the foundation (first year). She took several Brown courses after that, however, both during the academic year and during summer (e.g., Italian, history, sociology). She investigated Syracuse prior to admission but didn't apply. It didn't match up to RISD or the other places she applied to.
