I've been trying to find internships and jobs for the summer but have come up with nothing
How bad is it if I don't do anything this summer? I will be a freshman in college next year. I'm still unsure if I want to go into business or medicine. I'm still trying to look for any random job but it's really hard. I tried all the internet job sites (monster, craigslist, snagajob, etc.) but there really is nothing.

I will start looking earlier next summer and maybe even get an internship during the year. However, the chance of me finding an internship or job that's related to my career choices is looking pretty slim right now.

I've never really had a "free" summer before and don't know what future employers/adcoms will think about me wasting 3 months doing nothing

Getting a crappy job like waiting tables or lifeguarding would not have helped you unless you didn't have previous work experience. An internship would have looked good, but odds are you wouldn't have been able to get one anyway since you're not in college yet. So assuming you have held some kind of job before, not working this summer is just fine. Relax and have a good time.

Talk to your friends who have jobs at restaurants, etc...if they can "bring you on board" it might be easier for you to get employed. If that doesn't work, at least find some place to volunteer, like a nursing home or summer camp. Don't waste a summer...despite what people say it looks pretty bad if you can't say anything about your summer except that you watched TV and chilled by the pool.

And the more work experience, the better. Don't let some kid talk you out of taking a lower-wage job just because they think it wouldn't "look good." I've had friends with better GPAs passed over in favor of those with lower ones because the latter had more work experience...simple as that.

i did absolutely nothing my rising frosh summer :) i went on vacation for a month, then came back and lived at the beach! LOL

but yeah--look around. my cousin just got a job at bank of america (he's a rising frosh too) so you never know. check your local hs, community college, etc for listings... or even on the websites of nearby companies you are interested in working for/interning at.

Not having a summer job is largely frowned upon around here, especially as a rising frosh. We don't do it for the work experience, we do it to pay our ways through college. If finances aren't an issue, I suppose your options our limited to your imagination.
