Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks!

The truth is, Junior year is usually what makes/breaks a person. From the looks of your statistics, however, I can tell that you are serious about academics. Your GPA is stellar (although I would never, ever recommend that you remain happy with a “B”), and as you know, your standardized testing needs improvement.

In addition, some of the items on you ECs are quite impressive, but nothing that shines as a collective. XC is great, but mind that tens of thousands of students letter and participate in XC. Tons of students volunteer at hospitals, and so many students (especially Asians) play the instrument. You need to find a strong hook that shows your deepest passion from a variety of activities. Fortunately, you still have a year to work on it.

As for Penn, work on your SAT, get a 4.00 in your junior year, and find your passion, and I am certain that you will have a great chance.

Thanks samsun! Any others please?

Bump!

If you keep up similar grades to what you had in soph year, I would say that you would have a very good chance, maybe a low reach/high match situation. =]

Well, you obviously know the SAT CR/M needs to be around 1400 for you to increase your chances ED. The lack of awards is a little troubling, and I would work on that to distinguish yourself from the rest of the applicant pool. Best of Luck!

I think your academics are fantastic. Your SATs do need to be higher, but SAT II and AP scores so far are great. You have good ECs, hopefully you can show passion through them. Keep it up and bring out your personality through essays and recs and I think you have a great shot at Penn ED.

Oh okay! Thanks guys, I will most definitely work on my SAT scores and cultivate my EC’s.

Also, in regards to noreally’s comment, do scholarships count as awards? I’ve been looking at them on ***** and fastweb.

Thanks again!

Bump please!

I just started my junior year with IB/AP classes. It’s no joke. I was an effortless straight A student last year. This weekend, I did not leave me house. We started school Wednesday. Somebody’s out to lower my GPA :(

Hold on tight for your junior year, everything else seems really really good

Haha yeah, your first year will be quite a blast. What, with your world lit one and world lit two (1500 words each) and various other essays in English it’ll be fun! Also, look forward to your Historical Investigation! 1500-2000 words there!

Best of luck to you! I’m in my second year because my school allows some of us to start a year early!

Thanks for the advice :)

Haha I really don’t mind the writing, I actually enjoy it…is that weird? The only thing that bothers me is the sickening work load of my Advanced Bio SL class (oxymoronic much?)
You’re lucky you got to start out early! Best of luck to you too, not that seem to need it ;)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/761559-junior-how-improve-my-chances.html</a></p>

No! It’s not weird at all! I actually enjoyed the essays a lot! Do you happen to know what books you’re reading this year? And yeah…Advanced Standard Level…ahah! I’m taking SL this year as well! Hopefully we both get 7’s on the test eh?

Closer to 1500 from a top 100 school.

Ah, okay. So, just a question hmom5, do these top tier colleges even look at the writing section or do they just give it less weight?

Some do, some don’t. Many count it as a third SATII.

I recently read an interview with an adcom where she said something to the effect of “even when we don’t count something, when we see it, it makes an impression.”

I don’t know how the new score choice will work, whether you can pick and choose from different sittings. And many top colleges are not accepting score choice. So in your shoes I would assume writing counts.

Also, the writing section is largely formulaic. Would it be possible to get a tutor? Even a peer tutor? You need strong writing skills at most colleges.

Yeah, I’m currently enrolled at an SAT prep center. However, the thing is that I am not bad at writing as shown by my AP Lang score and A’s in my English classes, but rather, I just lack experience with the SAT. Time and practice will help me out there probably! Hopefully!

And thanks for your input hmom5. Is there anything else I could do to improve my application? Are scholarships a good idea? Do they count as awards/

Thanks!

Bump. Thanks!

“No! It’s not weird at all! I actually enjoyed the essays a lot! Do you happen to know what books you’re reading this year? And yeah…Advanced Standard Level…ahah! I’m taking SL this year as well! Hopefully we both get 7’s on the test eh?”

Haha I enjoy reading, writing…homework, now that one’s weird! Let’s see in English we are reading Othello, The Great Gatsby, a translated novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and short stories by Borges. In Spanish we are reading Goethe for now, I don’t know what we’ll done after. In French, I don’t know yet. What are you reading?
Hell yeah we’ll be getting 7s. I had a 6.2 average at the end of sophomore or pre-IB year, it would’ve been a 6.5 were it not have been for my barely passing grade in A1 Math! Aaaagh.

Not much to say… if you get a 2200 you are a shoo-in, anything above 2050 is still very likely ED with your impressive curriculum.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/762212-chance-delawarean-i-promise-chance-you-back-my-name-isnt.html</a></p>

Lol, homework is fun only to the extent that you have the possibility of doing well and getting a good grade right? =P But nice books. We read Gatsby and that’s the only similarity we share. We read A Hero of Our time, The Stranger, The House of the Spirits, The Great Gatsby, The Scarlet Letter, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Kitchen. You’ll have to use those novels or novellas that you read in essay by the way!

And arobins, are you so sure about a 2200 equaling a shoo-in? That’d be super cool if it were so!

Keep em coming guys! I chance back : )
