[/list]**General Comments: I’m thinking of getting a private college apps coach but idk. Lots of people at my school did it and they got into hella good schools even with shitty stats. ☹ what do you guys think?

What are my chances of getting into USC, UCB, UCSB, UCLA, UCSD, Stanford, Claremont McKenna, CalPoly SLO, Occidental, Pepperdine, and Santa Clara University? I want to stay in California for my undergrad.

Your SAT is low for USC, Stanford, and Claremont. I’m not 100% positive, but you will need to take SAT II’s for more selective schools like Stanford. Go to each website to check which ones you’ll need it for. Other than that, I think you’ll have a decent shot at most of your schools due to your EC’s and leadership roles. You’ll need to improve your SAT or get a good score on the ACT to help you with more selective schools. As for private coach… This is just my opinion, but I don’t think they can help that much. It really boils down to you. Writing good essays will significantly increase your chances anywhere. And maybe the people who got in with low stats had other hooks going for them, or wrote good essays. Either way, I know those coaches are expensive, and I don’t think they’re worth it if you’re self-motivated. Also, just some advice, but I wouldn’t include NSHSS on your apps.

thanks!
yeah im retaking SAT in october and hoping for at least a 2100. Stanford and Claremont are just on my list because I would regret not applying in the end hahaha but im not hoping for much from that end.

I’m a rising senior myself (plus a fellow DECA member hahaha
) so I would love to chance! I think your SAT is super good for Santa Clara, Pepperdine, CP SLO (my sister goes there!), and UCSB- for the rest though I would consider re-taking… A 2050 isn’t bad at all though! I think your ECs are stellar and it all just comes down to luck (I think your SAT is probably too low for Stanford, plus their admissions are super hard anyways).
I would say you would at least get into two of these schools: UCB, UCLA, UCSD, USC
CMC, Stanford, and Occi are up in the air! I wish you luck!

thank you!! always nice to find a fellow DECA member on CC
im really hoping i can increase my score another 50-100 points so i can be a little more secure with my chances

good luck on your upcoming apps!
hope you have a great senior year

I think Stanford is an extreme reach; Claremont-McKenna is also a reach. Your resume looks similar to my son’s (he is not a CA resident). Berkeley and Claremont-McKenna turned him down, but he got into Occidental, Pitzer, UCSD, and Davis. He also got into Willamette (with generous scholarship) and Whitman, on West Coast.

thanks for the input!

The UCs require 2 SAT II subject test scores.

@imsoworried you are correct, UC’s do not require any SAT Subject tests. There are some schools which recommend them and some schools that do not even look at them if submitted.

Four years ago when S applied to UCB it was required, but look at this statement from UC’s website: “Remember, these are recommendations, not mandates. You will not be penalized for failing to take the SAT Subject Tests. On the other hand, submission of these test scores (just like submission of AP and/or IB scores) may add positively to the review of your application.”

If you really want to get into a UC, I’d recommend taking them.

i feel like that for my major it wouldn’t really benefit me in any way to take the subject tests so i think im going to save my time and effort and put my focus on raising my actual sat score. what do you think?

wait question–does speaking 5 languages do anything to help your application. like i mean obviously its not a make or break factor but is it worth mentioning?

@imsoworried: After reading your post and other comments, here are my impressions:

As an Indian female, you will be judged against your peers. The Bay area competition (esp for Cali schools) is fierce. Your SAT Math score is weak, and your CR and W are a bit low. You should re-take the SAT. You also need to take SAT2s. For stanford you need to shoot for SATs > 750 in each subsection to be competitive.

Seems like up until now you took only 3 AP classes that were offered at your school, why not more? What were your grades in these APs? This is the same thing that colleges will be wondering, so address these issues somehow in your application.

Now for the good news. Despite having a fairly common list of accomplishments, there is one thing that stands out: Chinese traditional art x 11 years. What was this art, and why did you do it for 11 years. Do you speak Mandarin? Any interest in ultimately moving to China? This will be of interest to AdComs, so highlight it. Did you win any awards for this?

thank you so much for your input, it was very helpful
i will definitely be retaking the SAT and taking a few subject tests in november

as for AP’s, i only took the ones that i was interested in or had some sort of benefit to my intended major but i will address that in my application. where do you think would be best to do this- essays or additional comments?

as for art, i dont speak mandarin but i do speak 5 other languages so hopefully that will stand out somehow. i did win a few national awards for art so can i put that in my awards section? how do you suggest i highlight this in my application?

thank you again for your insight!

@imsoworried: unfortunately I still see your application as being haphazardly organized. I see a list of many club activities without much focus. I see some interest in DECA, community service, karate, politics and art. I don’t see the connection between the Chinese art and your intended major (marketing). You need to make your application cohesive and easy to summarize.

As a future marketer, you need to be able to have someone read your application within 5 minutes and come up with a brief “catch-phrase” about you. For example:Oh yeah, she’s the Indian kid from Cali who XXXX and YYYY and ZZZZ. These catch phrases are what the adComs will remember. The X, Y and Z about you are fuzzy. YOU need to help define XYZ and make them memorable.

Regarding your AP: have your GC mention this in their letter, don’t waste precious essay or comment space on this issue.

thank you! i will definitely work on this
