Chance me and I'll gladly chance you back with a paragraph

I'm a high school senior in California, looking to apply to San Jose State University, which is also in California. Maybe UC Irvine and UC Davis, but they look too competitive. I will chance you and I will type out a paragraph (at least fifteen sentences) if you chance me. Heck, you can have me chance you first if you don't trust me.

SAT Score: 1890 (first and only try)

Unweighted GPA:
Freshman-4.0
sophomore-4.0
Junior-3.9

Weighted GPA:
Freshman:4.0
Sophomore-4.2
Junior-4.2

Sophomore Year Classes:
AP World History:A (Got a 4 on exam)
English 2: A
Algebra 2:A,
Vietnamese 2: A
Biology: A

Junior Year Classes:
AP Lit: B (Got a 3 on exam)
AP US History: A (Got a 4 on exam)
Pre-Calculus:A
Multimedia: A
Chemistry: A
Vietnamese 3: A

Senior (current) schedule:
AP Calc AB, AP Lang, AP Govt, Viet 4, Web Design, Physiology

Extra Curriculum: Joined several clubs (Newspaper, Interact, Key), 30 hours community service, free private tutor for math, taught English to kids on sidewalk in Vietnam for 40 hours, got a high school Foreign Language Award, know how to code in HTML

Parent Income: Single parent, significantly less than 20k

You look very competitive for every school you mentioned. In fact, I’m surprised you aren’t aiming higher. If you could get that SAT score way higher, I would suggest University Alabama, where you can get a decent education with a full ride scholarship.

Assuming you don’t want to move too far away from home, aim higher up the UCs. Again, it’s just that SAT. Are you absolutely sure you won’t take another SAT? I understand money could be an issue, but unless you’re on the verge of bankruptcy, I believe this would be a good investment. PM me if you do think you might want to take another SAT.

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1690007-claremont-mckenna-duke-bucknell-grinnell-uofr-chances.html</a></p>

Overall you seem to be in good shape for all of those colleges. UC Irvine and Davis are definitely possible.

Academically you are very strong so that will definitely be a strong point. The only weak points is your SAT score and lack of strong leadership positions. For the SAT, you could definitely try one more time with the October test or maybe another one. I think that’s definitely worth a try.

I’ll reply to you in this thread, Woandering, and thanks for replying. First of, I would like to say you have a nice chance of getting into the schools on your list. Your GPA is overall great, but it’s not a 4.0. It could potentially set you back by not having a perfect GPA, but of course it’s a very slight problem. Your SAT score is wonderful, no real need for improvement there. But I’m sure you could get a 2400 if you ever decided to take the SAT again, which you were so close to getting. You have a great and colorful selection of AP courses for colleges to look at and be impressed. I would assume you at least got 3’s (passing score)for all of them, yes? For your EC’s, I feel like you should list your community service hours. That will show more regarding how much work you actually did once you managed to get those high positions in your high school clubs and programs. Regarding tennis, hopefully you don’t mention on your actual applications how you felt towards the quality of your skills in the sport (how you “sucked”). I’m sure you could list several more coughambigouscough EC’s on there. This is because your list, though it has quality, could improve a little more in the quantity section. You should refuse to list your race and income level on the apps, for the benefit of the doubt that affirmative action, at least in spirit, still remains. Since you live in CA, like me, how come you’re not applying (at least from the looks of your planned list of colleges to attend to) to UC’s here? I’m sure UC Berkeley and UCLA are prestigious schools for you.

will you be taking the sat again? i highly recommend doing so. However, your grades and course rigor make up for that in a way, so it’s not bad if you decide not to retake. However, yet i agree you don’t have many leadership positions. For the schools you are applying to, I think you have a good chance, though.

San Jose State–no idea, never heard of it, sorry.
UC Davis–match
UC Irvine–match

I’ll also reply to you, SeoulTofu, in this thread, and thanks for replying. Interestingly, you’re also Asian, have an income level of 120k, live in CA, and have a GPA of 3.9, just like Woandering. I thought I had clicked on Woandering’s link again when I actually clicked on yours, SeoulTofu XD. Using whatever limited knowledge in my head I have, you’d have a decent shot at most of the universities on your list. A bit iffy for the ivy league schools you listed, though. Ehh…the math classes that you took aren’t really impressive in my opinion. You should had at least gotten to Calculus BC by senior year if you want to be really competitive. Or did you, but decided to leave that out? Hmm…, for the more prestigious universities that you’re applying to, I think you should had gotten in some more AP courses. Your AP scores are rather low as 3’s. However, I’ve heard that colleges don’t look at your ap scores until you’re actually accepted into the college itself. They’ll just check whether you’ve passed the AP exam or not, I think. Your EC’s are super excellent, but do the *4.0 GPA (Spotlight on Excellence 2012 Perfect Attendance (2013)3.5 and above GPA (Spotlight on Excellence 2013)3.5 and above GPA (Spotlight on Excellence 2014) that you listed even hold any meaning XD. They’re kinda redundant since colleges know you already have a high GPA (which you will list separately in the actual apps), but of course they’re better than nothing. Similar to Woandering above, remember to place your community service hours. Eh, I’ve ran out of things to say. Idk if i got to 15 sentences that I promised.

Your academics look pretty strong for these schools. I would suggest taking the SAT again and you’ll be even better off. However, your lack of leadership may work against you. Schools want to not only see an educated student but also a student who has passion and dedication for what they do. Academically, you have a strong chance but your ECs may need some work.
Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1690114-what-are-my-chances.html#latest</a></p>

Honestly you have a shot at every school you mentioned. Youre definitely gonna get into SJSU and if you get 2000+ SAT then you will have a very good shot at both UCI and UCD. Your GPA is a good zone and your schedule is hard enough for those schools. Your ec’s are good enough for those schools and you SAT is a little low but could be good enough to make every school you mentioned already. I highly recommend you take the SAT again to get a 2000+. Then you can definitely have a shot at SJSU, Cal Poly SLO, UCSB, UCI, UCD and even UCSD.

Chance me back please

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1692280-please-help-me-pick-dartmouth-or-wharton-ed-will-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

Try the SAT again. Since you’re lower-income, you’re entitled to fee waivers - request them from your guidance counselor on Monday.
You are also entitled to application fee waivers, make sure to use them.
Are you ELL? If so, your accomplishments are really great.
Teaching on a sidewalk would be a great essay topic.
I would apply to UCLA, since they have a scholarship for lower-income/first gen/high achieving students such as yourself, meaning that they’d cover more with money you don’t have to repay.
Your list should include UCLA, UCB (why not), UCI, UCD, but why not add Scripps or Occidental… and why not go on a limb and add one or two full-need schools that include transportation in the package (Middlebury, Bowdoin, Carleton)?
Do you want to major in CS? That’s what SJSU is known for. If not, you can apply to SDSU Honors or other Honors programs within the CSUs, not to mention Cal Poly SLO.

I agree with the above comments. You should be able to get into the school mentioned with ease. Although you did not enroll in terribly hard classes, you did receive good grades. I think your ECs are fine, but your SAT score is a little low. I still don’t think that will be too much of an issue with those grades and given that the schools you mentioned are not the hardest to get into (compared to some of the other UC’s).

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1692679-michigan-will-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

Because you are instate you have a slight advantage. But your stats make you a highly competitive applicant so I believe you have a great chance. SJSU is a match and I believe you have a decent chance at UC Irvine. Only issue is your sat for UC Davis.

Best of Luck! Chance me back please
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1691716-chance-and-will-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

Your gpa is really good. I don’t know much about the specific schools in California but you gpa will help you get. I know if you are in the top 9 percent of high schoolars in California you are guaranteed acceptance into a uc school. I think it is if you don’t get into another uc school that you apply too. Also maybe try the ACT. I know a lot of people that did better on it than the SAT.
Chance back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1690899-chances-at-mostly-liberal-arts-schools.html</a></p>

Your GPA is great, but I don’t think your extracurricular activities are too strong. Being instate definitely gives you an advantage. For the most part, I agree with the above posts. However, your 1890 is on the low side if you’re ultimately going to apply for Davis and Irvine. I also struggled with the SAT (got an 1870) but took the ACT and got a 33 in my first sitting, so if you’re up for waking up early on a Saturday morning to take a long test again, I would say that it can’t hurt that much. From <a href=“San Jose State: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA”>http://collegeapps.about.com/od/GPA-SAT-ACT-Graphs/ss/san-jose-state-admission-gpa-sat-act.htm</a> , I don’t think you’ll have a problem getting accepted into SJSU. Good luck!

Chance me back if you can, please?
