Risk my GPA to go to a better School?

Hi all!

This past summer I was offered a guaranteed transfer to Umich for my sophomore year. I was delighted to receive this as I thought I had no hope of attending umich, the school my family has historically attended and my dream school. I decided to spend my freshman year at MSU (Michigan state university) and just wrapped up my 1st semester there. My GPA is 4.0, which was not hard to achieve at all, and I have no major problems with the campus life here in East Lansing. Also, I am pre med so i know that the college that I attend during my undergraduate years does not have much sway in med school admissions. I currently have a big decision to make, go to umich, a world renowned university where it will be harder to maintain my high GPA, or stay at MSU, a state school where it will be pretty easy for me to succeed.

What would you do in this situation?

Personally I think the difference between UMich and MSU is not a big a gap as you think. If you are happy and successful where you are, I think it makes sense to stay.

Michigan State is a great school. Dismissing it as just a “state school” does it a disservice - after all, Michigan is also a “state school.” Michigan State commonly ranks in the top 100-150 schools in worldwide university rankings (which is no small feat given that there are tens of thousands of universities in the world and over 2,000 four-year institutions just in the U.S.), and generally ranks in the top 50 public universities (and top 100 national universities overall).

It’s a great place.

That said, I think you should go where you want. Don’t assume that just because Michigan is more selective, your GPA will be lower. Don’t transfer to Michigan because your family went there, either. Where do you want to be? You say you have no problems with campus life, but that is not a ringing endorsement. Are you happy? Do you like it? Would you rather be at Michigan? If you never went to medical school - let’s say you changed your mind on your own - where would you rather have gone to college?

Right…^^^
