RIT or VCU?

My daughter wants to work as a Game Artist. She has been accepted into RIT school of Illustration and VCU for Communication Arts. Both of these programs look great. Interested to hear about experiences with these schools and these programs. FYI - She didn’t apply to art schools as she wants to minor in an academic subject so not interested in hearing thoughts on art schools. anyone have a point of view on the programs at these 2 schools?

curious at VCUARTS freshman are admitted to art foundation for their first entire year. Then in the spring of that year they first have to apply to their chosen major for admission. So is she a sophomore?
My D attends vcuarts so am very familiar, she is however a GD major.

What academic subject?

Have you visited the two campuses? We visited RIT and found the classrooms and studios for the School of Film & Animation (& I think some of the design majors, they seem to have regrouped some majors since D looked at it) to be impressive but weren’t enthused with the studio spaces and art on display in the School of Art (which Illustration is a major). This was about 3 years ago and studio space was very small and limited compared to all the other colleges visited. RIT is a great school for a lot of things and it makes sense that they’re putting more emphasis on the ‘tech’ side of art, but be forewarned and it’s worth taking a look.

We had the regular tour (which highlights the great animation studios) but also requested one of the art departments where we saw classrooms and studios for the fine arts.

Have you visited both? Because it might come down to where you daughter feels more “comfortable.” My d also wants to study Illustration but really liked VCUArts communication arts major (on paper/in theory) because it included a lot of the things that she was interested in (illustration, graphic novels, game art, etc.). But we visited and it was a big NOPE for her, personally. No experience with RIT, so I can’t speak to that. But I’ve read about kids on here loving both, so I really do believe that a lot of times it really comes down to a personal, “where I’ll feel comfortable living/studying for 4 years” fit. And with most schools, we couldn’t gauge that until we visited.

http://magic.rit.edu/studios/facility/ Have you heard about the new Media, Arts, Games, interaction and creativity research center opening up this year at RIT?

well our D is a soph at VCUARTS and visited RIT as well as many others and for her VCUARTS was the spot . Its worked out very well so far too.

Hi yes. Turns out i’m wrong. We just realized that she has to apply for VCU Communication Arts after her first semester and it’s very competitive. So very disappointed. This is the program she really wants but it’s now clear she might not get her first choice. So now the RIT vs VCU question is even more relevant because she is definitely in the Illustration program at RIT.

She wants to minor in Italian

Also any info on what % of kids dont get their first choice?

Dooey- fyi our D is a GD major at VCUARTS. % numbers entirely depend on the major. GD, Sculpture, photography very very competitive. I have not heard of anyone not getting into communications art.
