Road Bike vs. Mountain Bike

So I will not have a car for at least my first few years while on campus at UCSD. I was wondering whether I should choose a road bike or a mountain bike for commuting around campus and maybe the La Jolla area as well. I bike regularly now so I am likely to bike for recreation as well while at UCSD.

Which type of bike would be best for getting around campus and also small bike trips in the area? I’m looking for a bike in the range of $100-$300. Any advice and help is appreciated!

Road bike would be better. You’ll have more fun speeding down paved roads on the hills than navigating the park. Cruising along the ocean is easier with a road bike, too. There’re also a lot of road bike enthusiasts on campus if you get really into it.
