I live in the Bay Area and am an avid cyclist here, and am planning on bringing my bike down to SD. Anybody know of good routes near campus or interested in riding with me?

I love biking too and hope to get 1 to campus.....I don't know of ne routes yet but count me in 4 ne of ye expedetions.....

The campus is right on the coast and many people ride along the Pacific Coast Highway in both directions from the campus. People also ride along nearby Del Dios Highway which heads inland from the coast towards Escondido (hills, windy, nice views). There are many others. Because of the excellent weather in SD, cycling is very popular. There are also many areas to ride mountain bikes including nearby Penasquitos Canyon Preserve.

About how much should I invest for a bike to take to college? I heard there are lots of bike thefts, how to avoid them?

I wouldn't advise taking an expensive bike to UCSD. My son's was stolen a few weeks ago. He didn't want to bring his new bike so we bought him a used one to take to school. Whoever stole it cut the lock when the bike was parked outside the ERC dorms.

Yea... it seems cable locks are very vulnerable :(

If you're into road cycling but don't necessarily want to use your bike for getting around on campus, then you could probably keep your bike in the dorm room (it'll be a tight fit) except when you take it out cycling. You certainly don't want to leave an expensive bike locked up outside at night. Bikes are the highest theft item at all campuses. This includes Stanford, UCSD, UCLA, and other campuses that are in expensive, low crime areas.

use a tougher lock. isn't there one of those locks that pay u like 300 dollars if its broken?

what about those locks that lock your wheel to the frame? i have never used one of those but they look pretty sturdy.

my friends brother got his bike stolen at UCSD last year or the year before. i was thinking about getting a cheap goodwill bike.

say i must be the only one on the planet who doesn't know how to ride a bike and since i'm not gonna have a car...i have to ask, does or can the campus shuttle take you to classes?

i heard the shuttles take you around campus loop in both directions. so yes. oooooor, i could just teach you how to ride a bike. because like they say... "it's like riding a bike." and if you dont know what that's like, then you don't know what they are trying to say! i feel as if you are missing out on something huge.

ahhh okay...i dunno if anyone would want to take me up on bike lessons, i have a tendency to be uh, clumsy...so i might be better off using the shuttle

haha. okay. if thats what you'd prefer.

should i spend about 400 bux on a bike? I don't wanna get a cheap one since it might just break. anyways i'll be keeping my bike inside my dorm. it's mainly for exercising and riding around the campus.

nick if u go goodwill hunting for good bikes, im in

the only goodwill hunting i do is when i watch movies. lol. i kidd. but i have a bike. its kinda old. all it needs though, is a new seat. i would rather buy a new seat than a new bike. but i'll go with you if you want. haha. we could go to the one on almaden after school. you could get a little kids one. that would be fun!

a new seat woudl cost more than a brand spanking new goodwill bike. probably. i want one with a bell and a basket and tassels! oh yes.
