So, what's anyone's take on Roanoke College? DS just got his first acceptance from there (yeah!) so we at least know he has a place to go (that's out of the house). Interest is small LAC, political science/economics. His other schools are W&M, Mary Washington, Dickinson, Gettysburg and U.of Richmond.

Hi there:
Roanoke College has excellent interactions with full professors, and a quiet, charming campus in a small but lively Virginia town. I know two girls who are now physicians who attended there for Undergrad and swore by the power of small classes...and other students that enjoy playing on their sports teams. I know a grad who teaches Spanish and a grad who owns a bookstore. Kids seem friendly and hard-working.

best of luck to your child

I have a friend whose daughte attended Roanoke for two years and did not like it there. However, she was from NJ and transfered to NYU's Tisch School. I think that speaks well of Roanoke and the reputation it has with NYU! Alas, the finaid situation deteriorated significantly with the transfer.

Interesting that you should mention financial aide, as that's one of the reasons the school is of interest to me. When talking with their admissions person, we got the distinct impression that by the time they would be done with the finaid package, it would be about equal to the state publics, which is a nice incentive. My DS liked the place. I think "my" problem with it is it's smaller than his HS, to the point the theatre auditorium and stage are even smaller. As I said, I know, that's "my" problem!

Lynchburg College is nicer.

barrons: Can you say more about Lynchburg and why you like it better?

Tell us more barrons. I'd like to hear some comparisons. (Simultaneous posting. I can't remember what phrase we'd say when we said the same thing. What was it? LOL.)

I'd also like to hear more about Lynchburg. I do know a girl going there, and I think she likes it, but I know when I mentioned Roanoke to her, she said she had heard that Roanoke was more fun. Maybe that's the "grass is greener elsewhere" idea. I've been through Lynchburg, and can't say I was that impressed. I've seen Liberty College there, but not Lynchburg College, so would like to hear more too.

Do either of these colleges give good merit aid? Does anyone know?

I mean choff, did they actually offer you a nice amount?(Never mind what they say, what actually is in the letter.)

We visited both (Lynchburg and Roanoke) as well as Randolph Macon and Washington College (Chestertown Md) on one of our college visiting trips. My S would often develop a preference, afinity or aversion to a particular school but was rarely able to articulate his reasons for his reaction. He didn't like Roanoke, but applied early and may attend Lynchburg. We have friends who are happy and doing well at both schools. They are both lovely small schools and at this point I can't remember enough distinguishing features to compare the two! Lynchburg is pretty reasonable to begin with (a relative bargain) but also offers generous merit aid. They have a scholarship competition that includes writing an essay. It's all explained on their website.

And, does nayone know if the pre-med program at Lynchburg is comparable to Roanoke's. Thank you.

NJres, did your S also apply to Randolph Macon?

I live part-time in Lynchburg so it's the home team. They are adding some impressive new buildings for a small school. The Burg is becoming more of a college town than Roanoke with four schools in the area. I know Liberty scares some people but the kids are really normal and I have met many at some of the few local bars. Many were sent there by their parents.

Hmmm...Liberty kids being sent to the bars by their parents! :)

OK, you got me. But if you ever are in The Burg there is one really cool bar/restaurant called the Bull Branch. Tell Scott the guy from Seattle sent you.

Barron's - Will do, but I'll be sorely tempted to say the "Barron of Seattle" instead of the "guy from Seattle". :)
Do you have a house in Lynchburg that lets you spend part of the year there?

Backhandgrip, no, I haven't seen a dollar amount from Roanoke, but I do know of a few "givens". We are instate, so first we'd get the VTAG grant which is about $2500 for Virginian residents to attend Virginia private schools. Then, Roanoke has a simlar amount they give Virginia residents who are in the top 50% of their class. After that, ds would qualify for a $1000 grant since we are Lutheran and it's a Lutheran college. That's before scholarships, and they do have several available which he has applied for. So, no, there's no amount mentioned yet. That's why we're waiting to see all the finaid packages come April, and at that time, he'll make a decision. What I do see here is something that is potentially compatiable with the state publics he's applied to, and as a parent, I like that!

Carolyn,
Yes we have a house there. If you know the town well, it's on Peakland Place down the road from RMWC. I look forward to moving back there full-time in a few years. I loved the small-town life and climate. Now that there's a Starbucks within walking distance life is complete. We actually planned on living in C'Ville but found it overpriced and the neighborhoods not as nice as ours in Lynchburg. We would run up to Cville to take advantage of events at Uva and some better shopping choices.

What a lovely area of Lynchburg you live in! R-MWC graduate here.
