I’ve recently been accepted into the University of Richmond and the price is similar to those of state schools since I’ve been given a Presedential scholarship, thus making it affordable for me.
I wanted to know how the business school at Richmond compares to others such as: IU,OSU,UNC Chapel Hill, etc. I’ve been given admission in IU and OSU but IU have not given me business directly, anyways I just wanted to know exactly how good the Robins School of Buisness at Richmond is.
UR has the Richmond Guarantee which is extremely useful for internships, but I just wanted to know if it’d make sense for me to take Richmond over OSU/IU and for what reasons
You have not shared enough info to make reasonable recommendations. If you are not a direct admit to IU-Kelley & want to study business, then Richmond is the better & safer choice.
Do you have a specialty in mind ? What do you want to do for a career ?
As of now I am inclined towards finance but, I also want to look at marketing since I’m intrigued by that as well. I just want to know how Robins School of Business compares in general to the other schools such as Kelley, Fisher, etc
Go to www.wallstreetoasis.com, here you’ll find opinions from people in the world of finance discussing the merit and quality of different schools. Honestly, since the ultimate objective is to get a job these are the views that really matter…
Wallstoasis views most of the site through an investment banking lens. It does have forums for Corp Fin, Consulting, etc., but essentially is a message board for wall st (as the name implies). You’ll get a very harsh slant. For example, it will say something like “IU Kelly is a semi target, way better. UR is almost unheard of on the street…blah blah blah”. This is referring to IB front office jobs which you may or may not have any interest in. Also, Richmond will place really well in the mid atlantic. Check out Linkedin and look under the alumni section. You can see where Spiders go. A strong alumni at the right firms is an invaluable tool. Makes networking for interviews so much easier. S is experiencing that now (attends a different school but similar to UR)
URichmond is an elite university. Its business network is excellent AND the education you’ll receive will be excellent too. Being an elite university, they have money for students and they ensure you have good advising, small interactive classes, lots of activities, etc. There’s no downside I can see either professionally or academically.
In addition, you’re in - they don’t weed out, unlike at public universities which have several roadblocks on the way to the major, and their “entrance to major” requirements are relatively simple: a 2.7 GPA and 3 classes (Math, Economics, and Accounting). In addition, it’s not a competitive requirement - if you meet it, you’re in. (And frankly if you cant get a B- GPA in foundational classes you probably shouldn’t major in Business or Economics).
Contrast with Fisher, for example: you need direct admit + 11 classes to progress to major OR a 3.2 and 8 classes.
There is one non professional/non academic downside, which is the absence of football. It wouldn’t sway me because to me college is about education and placement, especially since Richmond doesn’t lack for School Spirit.
If you don’t have direct entry to IU forget it, it’s not worth it if you have direct admit at URichmond.
Wall street Oasis is ONLY about Wall Street. MOST people in finance DO NOT work on Wall Street. They work in boutique firms, banks, etc.
URichmond has excellent contacts with the DC network (which covers VA and MD and is extensive).
WSO is the type of site where posters “yell” at you asserting that getting an MBA is worthless unless done at an M-7 MBA program (Northwestern, Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Chicago, MIT or Columbia). Advice of this type is a bit over-the-top as it ignores several outstanding MBA programs.
I know that this thread is about undergrad business schools, but unless one is specifically targeting IB, WSO has greatly diminished value.
I forgot to note: even if you meet the requirements, business at tOSU is competitive meaning not all students who meet the requirements are selected. (The warning is written in big, bold characters on the Fisher website.)
I agree with most of what you’re saying and I do thank you for your response. I have been given direct admission to business school at Ohio State University. I come from Mumbai, India so typically I’d want to work in a big city and preferably as I said in a bank or the world of investments. Thus, would you still feel that UR will give me the needed path to success ?
