Rochester Institute of Technology or Stevens Institute of Technology

Greetings fellow scholars,

I recently got accepted into both school with the intention of studying information technology.

I received a $12,000 for RIT and haven't received anything from Stevens. Beside financial aid, which school is more reputable in the industry?

I've also visited both schools and both location look promising.

Any input?

Hey,

I have never heard of Stevens, but RIT is great if you are going for an engineering degree. My boyfriend is in his 4th year as an electrical engineering major and he just finished his 3rd internship very successfully (the company told him they would definitely hire him when he graduates and will also pay for him to get his masters while he works). He feels RIT has prepared him very well and he loves it there. Besides that, it is a fairly well known nationally and has a great network since their students do well during internships and graduation, and I believe I read their success rate of students getting jobs after graduation is pretty high (don’t quote me, but those would be good stats for you to compare schools with).

However, from a non-academic stand point, RIT has a very “geeky” atmosphere which you may or may not like, of course this is probably true for most tech schools. I personally didn’t like it and chose to go to SUNY Geneseo for my Biochem degree. But as I said, my boyfriend chose RIT and he really likes it, so it’s dependent on what your preferences are.

Hope that helps :)

I have visited both. I would personally take Stevens over RIT because of the location alone, especially since Stevens is literally across the river from NYC. I hated Rochester.

I don’t think you could really go wrong with either one for IT. I think Stevens might be a bit more well known in the city and will probably give you more opportunities in the city if thats what you’re looking for.

Personally, I’m all about following the money. Both Stevens and RIT have good reputations in tech, science, and engineering, but if an RIT degree will be significantly cheaper then Stevens, I’d choose that. You can always move closer to NYC later, and not knowing what degree you are going for it is only 2-5 years. I’m in my 4th year of a PhD program and it goes by fast. 2 years go even faster.

NY Scholar,
I have an interesting view of this as I did my undergrad up near Rochester, but did my masters at Stevens. I can honestly say that in terms of Job placement, average starting salaries, you would want to attend Stevens. The school is always in the top 15 in the country annually in career development and placement. Also, location is huge. You may think that the region a school is in does not matter, but it does greatly as most of the strongest partnerships that a school has will usually be close by. I experienced this firsthand in undergrad. For Stevens, they have ties with major companies in NYC and NJ as well as some PA/CT.

The information you provided as in fact helpful. Like you stated, RIT is fairly well known nationally and has a great network since their students are require to complete 3 blocks of co-ops. I believe co-ops are optional for graduate students. Currently I have a few friends attending RIT at the undergraduate level and I’m aware of the geeky atmosphere which really doesn’t bother me.

In terms of location, I agree that Stevens is in a better position than RIT. The disadvantage is the cost of living near NYC compared to upstate NY which would drive the cost up. I’ll give the financial aid office at Stevens a call tomorrow regarding any merit scholarships available to me. When I received my acceptance letter from RIT they also included my financial aid.

I applied for the MS degree at both institutions in Information Technology.

You are right, it looks like money is going to be the determining factor to which school I will be attending this fall. Currently I’ve received $12,000 from RIT with my acceptance package and I have the option of applying for various on-campus jobs. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I will be following up with Stevens this upcoming week regarding any financial aid available to me.

Hello fellow scholars.

I recently contacted the financial Aid office at Stevens the other day regarding any financial aid available to me.

They stated that first year graduate students are not normally awarded any form of assistantships or fellowships through the academic departments but private financial aid options are available.

Once i got off the phone with stevens, i logged on to RIT’s website to paid my tuition deposit.

RIT Fall 2012

Understandable.

No need to reply to a 2 year old post…
