I am thinking about forming a rock band at Duke next year. Does anyone know if people would be interested in going to a show (anything from greenday to metallica) and if there is a place to practice? (I guess getting a drum set might be a problem)

I'll rock out with ya! ...actually I may only be bringing my Acoustic Guitar... and I know I'm not bringing my Drum kit... I might bring my Electric up at a later date if such becomes useful.

Haha...people are ALWAYS interested in going to student band shows...there are some definite big names around campus (Securitas, Running Lights, and Bombadil are the ones that immediately come to mind) and a lot of students definitely show up for their shows. Also, a lot of time the friends of the band will all show up and it's just a really fun place for everyone to chill and relax (I loved when Securitas had shows this past year). So yeah, no matter what kind of music, you'll definitely get people showing up if you get the word out. Sorry I can't help much with the rest of your question...I don't know much about details or anything.

My roommate for next year took drum lessons last semester as a class (a quarter credit, I believe). He brought me down underneath Baldwin Auditorium once to show me the drum set he uses. He was given a key and everything so that he had 24/7 access to the room where the drum set was. I'm not sure if they rent it out other than that, though. If you're serious about it, it wouldn't hurt to ask the music department.

Email me at jtm10 at duke dot edu and I can hook you up with the email addresses of a few on-campus musicians who regularly perform and produce and practice music.

I don't like rock music at all, but you shouldn't have a problem finding students to be in a rock band or to listen to your performances. As the others have said, there are numerous music groups if that interests you.
