I was given an interview for both the Rodriguez and the Ervin scholarships. I heard that every person who goes to finalist weekend for a scholarship is at least awarded a half-tuition scholarship. Is this true? Also, does that mean that I have at least won two half tuition scholarships? If so, does that mean they amount to my full tuition?

I haven’t heard that but I HAVE gotten the impression that if you are a finalist you are 1) basically guaranteed admission and 2) more than likely getting SOME sort of merit-based scholarship (I’m just not sure about half tuition). I applied for the Ervin, Rodriquez, Danforth, Fitzgibbon, and Entrepreneurial. However, I have only been invited as a finalist for the Ervin. I know on the website it says for example the Ervin Scholars Program offers “multiple full and partial tuition awards”. I am wondering if they in fact have a set number of full vs partial scholarships or if they distribute scholarship money as they see fit based on the individual applicant, and will award each student either a full or partial scholarship… but Congratulations! haha

I’m a current Ervin scholar (class of 2014). It seems to me that at least in my year, all of the people who made it to the finals got the scholarship. Because I don’t know of anyone who made it to finals but didn’t receive the scholarship I can’t speak to whether you get half but it’s extremely likely you’ll get some sort of aid.

Yes are you still considered an Ervin Scholar regardless of how much money you receive from the program. Full or partial, an ervin scholar is an ervin scholar.

I believe that Ervin and Rodriguez are the only two programs that potentially award less than half tuition to Finalists. With that said, if you have been selected as a finalist for both programs, it likely means that you are a very strong applicant. Congratulations! See you soon!

Actually, I’m positive that all Ervins receive at least half-tuition, and I only know of 1 person who only has the half tuition scholarship in my class (2013). Everyone else that I know has a full (everyone else being all the people I’ve actually discussed financial things with). Maybe things have changed a little since I was admitted (though 2014 is a very small class…), but I don’t know ANYONE at all who has less than half. It’s also untrue that every person who makes it to finalist weekend will get the scholarship (though you will definitely get into WashU…assume its an acceptance letter). It seems that way at first, since everyone in your class at orientation was obviously at the finalist weekend, but you usually find out later about the 5 or so random people who weren’t offered the scholarship. This year, we supposedly have a LOT of people coming (i know one suite of guys who has 10 finalists between the 4 of them!) so be on your toes and take the interviews/activities somewhat seriously!!

Oh, and just to put in a plug for Ervin - for those of you coming for finalist weekend, you’re being welcomed into a WONDERFUL community. Ervin is hands-down my favorite part about being at WashU. It’s a fabulous family full of the most inspiring, amazing individuals at WashU who are doing the most awesome things. The last two Student Union presidents were Ervins, a senior Ervin helped to co-start our now nationally recognized slam poetry team, I know a 2010 Ervin graduate on a Fulbright right now, and just in general Ervins tend to do amazing things. Ervins volunteer in St. Louis, start and run clubs, play sports, become RAs - they’re just natural leaders and they really help you to see the potential in yourself as one too. And they’re open and caring above everything! It’s a huge legacy to live up to, but if I can (kind of sort of) live up to it, so can you! I also have a lot of good friends who are Rodriguez Scholars, and they are awesome too! Please PM me with any questions or concerns and enjoy the visit!

what are the interviews like for the ervin scholarship? do they really grill you on what you want to study and do with your life, or is it just more of a relaxed talking about yourself type interview?
