Regarding the rolling admissions process, this is what I understand, please correct me where I am wrong:
Rolling admissions starts as soon as the application is ‘live’ online. Once notified you can accept, putting down your deposit. It is not binding. You have no moral obligation to contact them to rescind your acceptance unless/until you accept an offer from another university. You lose your deposit. You can wait until the May 1 deadline to confirm acceptance, however housing is not guaranteed to first years. If others have put in housing requests earlier desireable dorms, or all spaces may be full by May 1. You CAN both accept, and choose housing, as early as you are admitted, however you will lose both deposits if you decide to attend another university.

Am I even close? Correct away. Obviously I don’t know the ins and outs of rolling admissions. Thanks!!

I have some related questions to the above discussion. Is Auburn a true rolling admissions school? That is, do they send out notifications in waves on a first in, first out basis? I noticed that they open applications on or around August 1. If one applied around August 1, when would one hear back? Are there advantages to applying early? I’ve seen conflicting information on this subject. In some places, I’ve seen that the decsions are sent out in waves (such as weekly), however I’ve also seen they notify everyone that applies Early Action all at once. Which is it?

I don’t know all of those answers but when I called today about War Eagle Day they said you can start applying June 1- My D is a Junior and we already missed the summer war eagle day and will have to attend in Oct/Nov and just do a family tour this summer and go ahead and apply this summer

If Auburn is really one of your top choices, you will want to go ahead an apply early.

I believe you will be notified about their decision sometime in October.

If accepted, you will be able to pay the admissions deposit and apply for housing. This step is CRITICAL if you have any hope of living in the Village, as there is high demand for this residential area. Note: As explained by the housing staff, the chances of being placed in this area are also affected by whether you are an athlete, Honors Presidential Scholar, or in a sorority. Overall, your housing application date is not the sole factor for placement in this area, but an early start/date does help.

Thank you for your reponses, If you are not notified until October 1, is there any difference if you apply June 1, July 1, August 1, or September 1? It doesn’t look like you will hear back any earlier or have a jump on housing.

It would be one thing if you could apply in June and hear back a few weeks later (LSU is like that - true rolling), but this does not appear to be the case with Auburn.

I would try explaining the deadlines, but the Auburn website does a better job at it. So here is an excerpt:

What are the freshmen application deadlines?

Students may begin applying for admission August 1, 2009 at [Apply - Apply for Admission](Undergraduate Admissions | Auburn University). Applicants with excellent academic credentials can be admitted by Early Action beginning in October. Early Action decisions are made by October 15 for students who have completed an application by October 1. Early Action decisions are strictly academic, based on a combination of high school GPA and the ACT or SAT score of the applicant; other factors are not considered. Students who meet the Early Action criteria will be accepted on a weekly basis from October 15 to February 15.
