Romani Jr is on the way

My one craving was orange juice with flat ginger ale to reduce the acid. Couldn’t stand the smell of coffee or chocolate.

With D1, I craved cheeseburgers. With D2, I couldn’t get enough of sauteed spinach.

I had no cravings with S1. But with S2 – Fritos. No idea why.

No cravings that I can recall with S2, but with S1 it was potatoes. Any form would do, but I preferred mashed or french fries.

I’m sending good thoughts your way, Romani! My morning sickness wasn’t terrible but saltines first thing in the morning definitely helped me.

My weird craving with S2 was Kentucky Fried Chicken. Normally it grosses me out, but I suddenly and inexplicably fell in love.

I have only been getting “morning sickness” late at night. It’s like my body can do nothing particularly normal ?

Mr R picked up some carryout from my favorite restaurant that I started craving so I’m about to dig into that. Fingers crossed… lol

I’m really not a big junk food eater. I never have been. Other than pop which has always been my weakness (and I’m down to one can a day because I need some caffeine - a bit more if I’m nauseous because sprite has been doing wonders to calm my stomach.) Even the last few days, I’ve been able to get down a fruit smoothie that has ~3 fruit servings + soy milk and some fruit juice. Before the nausea I was getting 2+ veggie servings a day on top of that.

I’m overweight because I still never managed to lose my prednisone weight and have been told to only gain something like 10-15 lb. I’ve currently lost 5 lol.

My only concern is protein. I’m a vegetarian and several of the protein sources I used to eat are not agreeing with me. I have an appointment with a nutritionist on Monday and I’ve been keeping track of what I eat. I seem to be getting more than enough vitamins and minerals (even for pregnancy) but even with my protein supplements, I’m coming up short :frowning:

We have a powdered whey supplement that you can throw into smoothies. Something like 24 gm of protein per scoop. There should be stuff out there that you can use to add some protein. Beans might be too hard on your stomach right now.

When I was preggers with twins, I tried to have 100 gm protein/day. They were born 6 weeks early and were 5 lb 1 oz, and 6 lb 1 oz. Is there a connection? I don’t know but it can’t hurt.

@greenwitch I tried whey protein first and it made me very, very sick. I’ve always been a little sensitive to dairy but now I cannot tolerate anything more than a little bit :frowning:

I ended up getting a vegan protein powder. I was skeptical of a vegan powder having complete protein but I sent it to a family friend (who is a GI) and she confirmed that it really was complete.

Will eating a little bit of wild salmon or free range chicken make you sick? Even a vegetarian can change their eating habits for a short time, for the health of the baby. Because in the end, that’s really what counts.

As a vegetarian, try quinoa and chickpeas for protein sources. Both are pretty tame when it comes to smells that might trigger nausea.

When I was pregnant with DD, I had morning sickness all day, every day, for eight months - right up until the minute that the terrible heartburn started. And she wonders why she was an only child!

Oh, and I craved tuna salad and peanut butter, but not together.

@busdriver11 no idea but I haven’t eaten meat in like 15 years. Maybe I could do chicken. I’ll bring it up with the nutritionist on Monday. Red meat can trigger inflammation so I’ll continue avoiding that. Not a good idea to risk triggering a flare.

Fish is a big no. I’ve never liked fish and now seafood smells are making me very sick. That’s been the one constant since getting pregnant lol.

Protein bars?

I know it can be hard to change your diet, especially after long periods of time, as habits are so ingrained in your routine.

This summer, after being a meat eater for my entire life, I went vegan for about three weeks, due to worries about arterial blockage. Fortunately, I found out they are clear, however, I still haven’t started eating beef or pork. It just doesn’t appeal to me. It took effort just eating small bits of chicken and turkey again (smoked salmon was easy to bring back). If it was that hard for me after 3 weeks, I can’t imagine how tough it would be after 15 years! Maybe start with a veggie soup made with chicken bullion, then add small pieces of chicken to your regular stir fry. Turkey burger with bbq sauce, ground, spiced turkey on your nachos, whatever you fancy.

@“Youdon’tsay” I… feel really silly for not thinking of that.

@busdriver11 I do eat chicken and beef based broth (like french onion). I’m not opposed to eating meat because the health of my child trumps most of my non-pregnancy morals (though I’d probably still do my best to get like free-range chicken lol). I’m just afraid to start eating it at this point because it’s been so long and I’m afraid it’ll make me sicker.

You can get more protein by throwing some hemp hearts, chia and flaxseeds into your smoothie mix. You can also steam zucchini and cauliflower then freeze, to add to the smoothies for additional nutrients without really altering the taste. Adding a slice of ginger may also help.

I would be very careful with protein powders. They have been found to have all kinds of contaminants, including lead, cadmium, and BPA, and plant-based ones were the worst. I also wouldn’t worry too much about the amount of protein you are getting. The nutritional needs of an embryo are close to nil, apart from adequate folate, and your body will prioritize the embryo over you. Americans get a lot more protein in our diet than we actually need, so unless you are eating a very strange diet, you are probably ok. I think the nutritionist is a great idea, but I think you will be fine no matter what.

@CIEE83 I’m not like most Americans. I eat close to a vegan diet and some of my former protein sources are making me very sick.

Where are you coming up with the contaminants claim? [If it’s “the clean label project” that’s been pretty thoroughly debunked]

Your concern about chicken is something to consider and go slowly. After 35 years of being a vegetarian I began eating meat again due to my H’s medical needs. I can eat red meat in small quantities but chicken and egg yolks make be feel ill for 24 hours after.
It is a poultry intolerance and has to do with enzymes and the gut changing from the vegetarian diet. There is not much nor good information about this. When I have tried eating chicken dark meat is more tolerable. Especially with todays chickens the breast is often dry. There is a particular stomach ache that happens when I (and many others) eat poultry.

Can you eat whole eggs? Just go slowly in introducing chicken back into your diet and perhaps eat dark meat first or eat white meat with additional fat such as a sauce.

I ate too much tuna as my source of protein and eggs.
My heartburn started every night for the entire pregnancy at 12:30 a.m. I do have to wonder if bean nachos was the best choice to crave:).
