Room Arrangements

Is it possible for a freshman to get a single? Do singles exist? How many roommates can a student have in one of the dorms? Would you recommend rooming with more than one student? How are the room arrangements for two students rooming together and for more than two students?

At boarding school, I roomed with a kid for a year and had a great time. When you entered the door, well that was my room and the common room. Then there was a door that led to his room. So we still had our privacy. I'm afraid of rooming in a situation where we both live in one big (or perhaps still small) room and both sleep in the same room.

I visited Rice about a year ago and remembered the rooms in the college I went to having been pretty nice.

Thanks for the help.

No, freshmen don't get singles. The vast majority of freshman share a bedroom with one other person, though that can be in a double or a suite (where there's another 1 or 2 bedrooms, each with 2 more people). You don't get to pick your arrangement - basically if you're assigned to a college like Martel or Wiess, you're getting a suite, and if you get assigned to a college like Jones or Brown, you're getting a double.

Doubles are pretty much like living in one big room, though the rooms are spacious. The suites that I've seen are also spacious, with slightly smaller bedrooms to make up for the amply-sized common room.

There are actually two freshman singles suites in Martel.

Almost all the rooms are pretty spacious, however.

You may want to prep yourself now, because that seems to be the likely scenario.

I can't remember when the questionnaires were sent out my son's first year, but you are going to get a detailed questionnaire about your likes and dislikes. Rice puts in A LOT, and I mean A LOT, of effort into matching roommates.

Be optimistic.

your o-week coordinators are in charge of putting you guys together. Dont lie on them! if you smoke or 'smoke' then say you do, if you are a drinker then say that as well.
