Room Assignments

So my school's room assignment priority is supposed to be by the day that your housing deposit is turned in. I turned mine in during December. My school seems to have taken none of that in to mind when assigning our rooms.

First off, our room assignments came out a day late. I requested a double in one of the suite style dorms and was placed in a single in a traditional dorm (which I would be fine with if not for the extra money and the bathrooms being at the end of the hall). Since then my room assignment has changed at least twice. I am at the point that I have given up trying to make contact with my possible neighbors.

I also know many other freshman who were placed in upperclassmen unfurnished apartments, which was not even an option when applying. I loved this school and now their lack of organization and communication is making me worried that I made a wrong choice.

Opinions? Similar experiences?

Usually, I don’t buy the whole “deposit early and get a better room” thing. If the college is really doing their job, they try to match roommates to avoid future problems. I don’t think they only look at who paid when to decide who to match. If an early payer and a late payer match in terms of sleep, music, personality, etc, I think they would just “match” them.
So, you were given a single, but you indicate that your room assignment has changed at least twice. Do you like the assignment now? Maybe they had more students decide to attend than originally estimated, so they needed to utilize other housing options, or they could have had a problem in a dorm with something that will take a while to fix. There’s still time before school starts, and some people won’t show up, or will decide to room with someone else they meet at the beginning, etc. Don’t get too worried about it, and just focus on getting to know people in general who will be in your dorm. Everything will end up working out, and once classes start, you will rarely be in your room!

Thanks. Currently I am still in a single in a traditional. I am sure that everyone at the school will show up considering that it is a decently elite school and has a pretty low acceptance rate. And school starts in two and a half weeks, so I am a bit nervous.

I felt your pain freshman year! Freshmen are always shafted when it comes to dorms, sadly. That’s just how it is across the board. My university gave us (the freshmen) our top three wishlist for dorm halls. I was one of the first freshmen to apply, but I was given my last choice, which was the prison-esq dorm of evil! lol

Now, as a Sophomore, they give us the choice to pick our dorm and the specific room, which is super nice. I have a super nice suite with a friend as a roommate. So, it does get better after freshman year!

@IThinkICan100: it’s completely the opposite at my school. Freshmen get first dibs on the dorms (since they get accepted first) while transfer students only get into dorms if there’s any space available after all the accepted freshmen have sent in their housing application, otherwise transfer students get put into student housing apartments. The rest of the students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) have to live in apartments located within the city, since dorms are primarily reserved for freshmen (and the RAs).

This is untrue. Especially, at universities where freshmen are required to live on campus.

At my school, Freshmen are supposed to have priority because we are required to live on campus. Ive heard you are lucky to get in to a dorm after freshman year.
