I have been offered a one bedroom/two person off-campus apartment at Westwood Chateau. That's what I put as my preferences when I submitted my housing application, but I realized soon after that I'd much rather live on campus. I want the 19P meal plan!!! I submitted a CAR, but UCLA Housing didn't approve it. Is this Room Swap/Transfer my only hope of getting on campus? Has anyone been to the Room Swap/Transfer event? What's it like? Is it very organized? I get this idea that people will be arguing, begging, crying and possibly fighting at this event.

Also, how willing are people to trade a double, private bath or double shared bath for what I have been offered? I'm going to be so miserable if I have to live off campus.

You can get a non-resident meal plan if you really just want to eat in the residence halls.

You can also put some money into your BruinCard and just use that to eat.

I don’t know anything about the room swap though.

I went to the room swap my freshman year. It’s a bit of a zoo but I certainly didn’t see people crying/fighting/arguing. They literally just post a large list on one wall of a conference room with: person’s name/contact number, the room they have, the room they want. When/if you find someone who you want to trade with you call them up and if they agree you arrange to meet at the housing office to sign all of the paperwork and settle any money differences. Check to see why they want to move out though, if it’s a roommate issue you’ll want to be forewarned (I wanted quieter roommates, the girl I switched with wanted more social roommates, it ended up working out beautifully)

From what I remember, people generally wanted to go cheaper (like, they had a double and wanted to get into a triple, people in plazas/suites wanted to get into residence halls, I know people who were eager to get off campus because they figured it would be cheaper, etc etc). Like phospholipase said too, you can get meal plans even if you’re off campus.
