D is in Fahey part of the Tuck Mall residences. Anyone have any info on these dorms?

That means she'll be in the new dorms (opened fall 06). They're clean, nice, and pretty spacious (largeish 2-room doubles for the most part i think). They're also pretty central location - a stone's throw from the library and very close to dining halls - much more so than the other '12s in McLaughlin, the Choates, and the River), and a backdoor to frat row.. Her floors will be predominantly other '12s but there will be '09s in the suites at the end of the halls. There are co-ed single bathrooms and showers (i think 4 each per hallway).

On the other hand, I feel the new dorms are pretty soulless, lack character, and don't foster a community environment nearly as well as the older "worse" dorms (russell sage, the river, choates). They feel almost like a condo or hotel rather than a "homey" dorm. but that's just me.

@rightnotleft, could you tell me a bit more about the River Cluster?

Sure, the river cluster has spacious rooms (singles, 2-room doubles, 3-room doubles) in rather old buildings, but the community feel cannot be beaten (though some choates residents claim they can be). You will be quite far from central campus (well, like a 7-minute walk) as the dorms are behind the Tuck and Thayer schools. The river cluster's Judge and French buildings are 100% '12s, so you'll make friends for sure.

It's a strong community, and generally the rooms are large. It's just far, so people tend to undervalue the rooms.

Also in the river cluster are the Maxwell and Channing Cox apartments, which used to be reserved for seniors, but now I believe are open for room draw (that is, i think sophomores are living there this coming year - i could be mistaken).

The cluster was build in the '70s, and it kind of shows. also, you'll be near construction of a gigantic new building for the Tuck school ... although maybe that'll be complete by fall.

Awesome. Thanks. :)

And, from the River, you can take the graveyard shortcut to Thayer. That is, if they haven't torn down Thayer by then.

rightnotleft and everyone else - any info on Russell Sage, 2 room triple specifically?

Russell Sage is in a great location--near Thayer, the library, and most classes. It's very central. The two-room triples are not the largest rooms in the world, but are still comfortable. Most people have all three beds in one room and all three desks in the other (entrance) room.

is it common for 2 room doubles to have beds in one room and desk/whatever else in the other? or the other way around?

How about the singles in the Little Choates? Any info or advice about it? Thanks!

Bissell Choates? And are corner rooms for double larger or smaller than usual? Thanks!

the choates were supposed to be temp housing back in the day, and they're still here. they're old. but they foster a good communal relationship.

as far as sizes ...

look at the floorplans at

Residential Communities

i could be wrong about this, but i think all the buildings in the choates are pretty much the same.

Russell Sage and Fahey/McClane are def the best locations. You guys lucked out! And I kinda disagree about bonding in the new dorms. I see so many more freshmen hanging out in the amazing tv lounges and kitchens together in the new dorms, than the run-down lounges with the dim lights and decrepit furniture in the old dorms.

You will bond with you floormates over living in the River, especially during winter term when it takes an eternity to trudge to campus through the snow.

I wish I'd lived in the Choates freshmen year -- everyone I know who lived there had a blast.

As far as 2 room doubles, most pairs split the rooms evenly, and the person with the inside room just has to walk through the outside room every day. If you want to bond with your roommate, I suggest putting desks/futon in the front room, and beds in the second. I lived in a 3 room triple my freshmen year, and all three of us slept in the inside room. I would literally go to sleep 30 min later every night because we would stay up chatting. For some reason, laying in bed in the dark and the radiator clanking at midnight offers the perfect mood to have deep conversations.

any info on rauner in the mclaughlin cluster would be appreciated :)

Rauner and the Mclaughlin clusters are also new dorms (in their second year), but they are really a bit far from the main classrooms.

Aside from being far from the main classrooms, can anybody give more details on Rauner? Thanks.

S has a 3-room double in the River. He doesn't seem to have any idea whether they get furniture for the common room, like a couch. Anyone know?

the standard funiture is a bed, nighstand, desk and chair. I remember when my D & rommates had an extra room- it was empty. They purchased a futon.

Evolving vox is a great way to go to rent futons. They make it so easy because they rent by the term and they drop off and pick up the futon for you. And the futons are really nice quality.

Walmart's futons are super thin and cheap and it will be such a pain in the butt to store that thing during interims.

Mclane has co-ed bathrooms?? ughh not looking forward to that
