Does Rice give out one of those questionaires for roomate options? I know that they choose your residential college, but does the student have any say as to what type of roomate they get (quiet, party animal, late bedtime, early riser)?

Yes, they will send you a form which is in depth. Be honest about it to minimize having a bad roommate experience.

You specify your ideal sleeping hours, how much you party, whether you mind people being in your room etc.

Is there a “random” option, where they assign you to a roomate who also selected the random option? Most of my friends in college had that option on their questionaire and loved the result, and I personally love surprises:)

The easiest way to end up with random is to be very generic on your form and say that you do not care. Someone else will answer with a “meh” and they may toss you two together.

Please don’t be overly generic on your form. It’s a pain for the O-Week coordinators and you will likely end up with a pretty bad roommate match.

Also, don’t choose to room with someone because you know them. You’re way better off leaving your fate to the O-Week coordinators. Some of the most disastrous roommate pairings I’ve seen were people who chose to live together.
