Do engineering majors tend to get assigned roommates who are also engineering, who aren't engineering (to give it a mix), or is it just random?

As far as I know, its random unless you and a friend arranged to room together. There were quite a few engineering majors on my floor and they were all paired with non-engineering people.

Thanks socalgal.

just wondering, is this a regular-year question or an orientation question?

if it's regular-year, you have the option of choosing roommates or getting randomly assigned one. if you choose random, it'll be by "fit" as in similar study habits, etc. rather than by major.

if it's orientation, the rooms are done alphabetically, so you'll have a roommate who shares the same first letter of your last name.

LOL I like that you put fit in qutotations because my roommates and I were completely different. I don't think we had even one common answer in that housing survey yet we got paired together. One of my roommates was a complete slob who never cleaned anything or took out the trash and my other roommate was a neat freak who was bordering on OCD sometimes. They also had totally different sleep schedules not to mention different viewpoints about pretty much everything. Let's just say, it was an interesting year.

It was a regular-year question. I assumed it was random but was wondering if the college would purposely 'mix-up' the majors to ensure the roomies weren't too insular or possibly purposely try to match them since their interests could be more similar. Since so many people either don't know their major or switch majors, I suppose random (based on major) is probably the best method.

How can you arrange the room assignments??

I noticed a high proportion of South Campus majors paired up with South Campus roommates and a high proportion of North Campus majors paired up with North Campus roommates on my floor during my first year. However, these floormates may have already been friends who requested each other, or it may have been mere coincidence...

for the most part it's random. one factor that may come into play is that one questionairre you filled out when applying for housing. you were asked if you smoked, drank, what time you slept, etc.....

90% of the time, engineers will be paired with non engineer majors.
