Roommate assignments out?

So we finally figured out that my D was assigned to Spruce but how in the heck do you find out who the roomie(s) is? Are we just really inept or is anyone else finding this all mysterious? We know it’s supposed to be under ‘my record’ in the portal but we can’t seem to find it! Any suggestions?

If memory serves me right, roommate info is sent in a snail mail letter concerning dorm assignments. I don't recall my daughter indicating that it was listed under "My Record" on the portal.

My D, in talking with the facebook group, found out from someone who called the school, that rooming assignments were to be sent out mid July, so they are supposed to be hearing via snail mail any day now. Apparently the rooming assignments on my record are for billing purposes only. Some of them are accurate, and some are not. The official one to trust is the one they send her in the mail.

I talked to my councilor a few days ago who said that the housing stuff had just been finished and was being sent out the next day, so we should be getting it any day.

For those of you who end up in Spruce, the location is, in my view, perfect for freshmen. It is the closest dorm to the Terra Building, where virtually all your classes will be, is in a neighborhood with a gizzillion restaurants, cafes and shops, is 5 minutes from all the theatres on Broad St and is safe to walk to at night from all the school buildings along Broad St. (There is usually a load of foot traffic along Broad St from Walnut to South Sts and on Spruce from Broad down to 11th even as late as 12 - 1 am. Doesn't mean you shouldn't use common sense and make sure that you walk with friends late at night, but it is generally a safe area, just use common sense.)

Some practical suggestions:
1. Talk to your roommate in advance and work out how you are going to equip your kitchen. There is virtually no counter space in the Spruce kitchenette area and not that much cabinet storage. You don't want the storage hassle of both of you showing up with duplicate pots, pans, dishes etc. Also, you will probably need a small kitchen cart/stand for a microwave and toaster oven.
2. The dorms come with 2 desks, 2 beds and 2 5 drawer 3 ft wide bureaus. You may want to have some plastic stackable drawers (Rubbermaid makes some) that can either slide under your bed or which can be kept in the closets or the entrance hallway of the room. My D found it necessary to keep her bureau in the walk in closet to make room for the kitchen cart that held her microwave and toaster oven.
3. Girls may want to have a 2 level shoe rack that sits on the floor in the closet. Ballet, jazz, tap, character shoes, shoes to go out, winter shoes for when there is snow or slush, you will use a lot of shoes. Guys, well we know you just keep all your dance shoes in your dance bag until they rot and only need a pair of sneakers on top of that, so you can pass on the shoe rack :) .
4. Fans. Are critical. The dorm rooms are hot in August and September as well as April and May. Window box fans are great. Can sit right on the window sills for the 2 very large windows and push a lot of air. You will also want 1 or 2 small desk fans to direct air on you. My D and her roommate both used box fans in their windows and a desk fan on their desks. My D also had a fan that clamped onto the head or foot of her bed so she had directed air when sleeping at night.
5. No extension cords are permitted. But power strips with long cords are. You will need them.
6. Bring enough clothing so that getting laundry done is never a crisis. There is 1 washer and 1 dryer per floor in Spruce, so plan accordingly. There are laundromats in the area but you won't have time during the school week to get your laundry done in bulk. (See #2 above - you will want more storage space for clothing.)
7. There is a Home Depot, Best Buy and Ikea 10 minutes driving from the Spruce Dorm on Columbus Boulevard (aka Delaware Ave).
8. Finally, now that I have your head swirling with all these details, there is a Capagero gelato/sorbet parlor at Walnut and 12th or 11th Sts. The best, without doubt, gelato and sorbet in the city. When you go there (not if, when) ask for my D's friend Ellie who is a 3rd year BFA acting major at UArts.

Oops, Capagero is at 13th and Sansom.

We too are anxiously waiting for dorm/roommate info. Noelle's mom, how did you find out about Spruce? And JeffB how did you find out who your counselor is? We were told that he would find that out at orientation? It feels like March all over again, the way my son keeps checking the mail for any housing information!

If you go to the MyUArts webpage, log in, select the MyUArts Record tab, select Student Menu, you will see "My Profile" Click it and you get a page with a bunch of student info including the dorm address. CAUTION - The listed address may not be the actual one - it could be, but may not be. It is there initially just to trigger the billing process. You don't know the actual dorm assignment with certainty until you get the bill from student housing. At that time you will also get the info on your roommate.

Thanks MichaelNKat. I'll tell my son about it when he gets home from work later tonight!!

AZKMom, i don't remember how i found out who my councillor was, i think she may just be my admissions councillor. I think I got her contact info in response to submitting my application. Nevertheless she's been really helpful with any questions I've had. When I called the admissions office, she's also the one who answered.

JeffB, sounds like that is indeed your admissions counselor. You will find out who your academic advisor is (who will be from either the acting or MT department, depending on your major) when you get your registration packet.

Thanks, JeffB. Yes, that makes sense that it was your admissions counselor. My son has also spoken to his and actually met her when we visited. He's also got his fingers crossed that the Spruce address listed is correct!

Has anyone heard any news yet for uarts dorm/roommate info? We also spoke with the housing office on 7/19 and were told the letters were going out that day. Appreciate any additional info...thanks

Nope, still waiting. He sure would like to know; so would I.

Also waiting. D did find a dorm address on the MyUArts webpage. Thanks michaelnkat!!
Anyone have pictures of Juniper dorm to share?

Don't have pictures but Juniper is the most recently renovated dorm and has air conditioning (at least from what I've been told). It is usually limited to upperclassmen. Lucky daughter!

That is good news, MNK. She is twenty-one and a transfer student, so it may be a good place for her. I hope it really is her dorm. Will we know for sure when the room assignments come?

My D got hers in the mails today. It was same as what was on her Uarts portal. In the letter it lists her roommates and their phone numbers. She is in Furness w/ 4 other roommates. Not her 1st choice but it's OK. Hopefully you'll all be getting your envelope soon.

holly06, yes, when the "snail mail" comes, as it has now for kimoki's D, it is official.

Good to hear, Kimoki!! He would really like to get in touch with his roommate and start planning who has what. Hopefully in the next day or two!!
