I'm a freshman living with a roommate this semester, and I have decided that I want to live alone next semester, and my roommate has also decided that he wants a different roommate next semester. Am I allowed to "detach" myself from my roommate and have him get a new roommate while I live in an apartment/single for next semester?

I assume you are living in a dorm. Absolutely you can move out to other accommodations. It is funny you would think you needed to do this.

Yes, my son did that. There were a few single rooms available, and he picked one.

Excellent. What would be the procedure for me to leave my roommate and get a new room alone?

Contact Housing and see if they know yet if there will be single rooms available. They can tell you how much extra it will cost, and what you need to do.

There is a form to use for a roommate dispute. I would use it. You are not likely to get a single, but would probably be put with someone else. It would take a little more work to get a refund for your room if you left student housing. It can be done.

I am actually considering the same. Do you know if it was something your son had to request early on in the semester? I’m wondering what my chances are, especially with the availability and all.

My son didn’t have a good roommate situation and did nothing about it. If you are unhappy, start the process to room with someone else.

Like I said, there WERE single rooms available for second semester. We didn’t call housing until late in the first semester. We didn’t have to fill out a roommate dispute form.

Woohoo, good to hear MaineLonghorn. Sound advice from someone who has been there.

I emailed housing today. I am keeping my fingers crossed that there are still singles available.

The waitlist is 40 people long and there are only 6 singles left. There’s no way I’m getting that room.

Wait, who told you this? Do you know how they’re going to assign the single rooms they have left?

What paperwork do I need to fill out in order to break my housing contract?
