So, I'm here at Cal right now doing their Summer Edge Program and my roommate smokes and drinks REALLY frequently (mostly every night). Every night he would go out and arrive early in the morning after having smoked or gotten drunk with his friends.

It's not that I mind the fact that he smokes or drink, it's just that the scent of pot in the room REALLY gives me a headache and I am unable to sleep in the night.

Also, he is NOT courteous at all and has no sense of respect. He would always talk (might as well say shout) in his native language in the early hours of the morning while talking to his girlfriend/family. Last night, he heated up popcorn and blasted music in his laptop at 2 AM.

I've been with him for almost 3 weeks now and so far I have not gotten any good night sleep..

Sorry if I ranted too much...so my questions are:

How should I approach this?
Should I request a new roommate?
If so, what is the process in requesting a new one?

Also..when will we know who our roommate is for the school year?

Did you talk to him that he’s being a tad bit disrespectful?

Here’s an update:

He and his friend just smoked in the dorm so the entire floor smells like pot right now. RA came in and **** will be going down soon :)

u sure the RA isn’t coming down to join…?

dude, where does he go? Cal’s party scene is pretty dead during the summer…at least for guys not in frats…

I hope it all works out for you. He’s probably going to be severely punished (haha sike). They’ll probably just give him a slap on the wrist. You should request another roommate.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to do. Is that even possible? My friend says I can’t request for a new roommate because:

“The RA doesn’t know who it was and under the 4th amendment and Berkeley housing rules, they can’t search the room, without Student Court approval. Unfortunately, you cant get a roommate and the RA will suspect both of you.”

That is such ********. I clearly said NO SMOKING in my residential housing application, and clearly this is not the case once you walk in the room and smell marijuana!

BTW, the RA who opened my door since I was locked out clearly smelled pot in our room. I told her what happened and she said that it’ll stop…so what’s gonna happen? You can clearly still smell it even now…which is why I don’t wanna go back in.

dont wait for anyone else to take care of it for you. report it to a higher up, or threaten RA that you will send a complaint to a higher up. theres gotta be SOMEONE there that could take care if it. this is berkeley, pot isnt new.

Don’t expect anything more than a slap on the wrist for your roommate, as others have already said. They’ll send him to peer review board and he’ll write a very sarcastic essay about how sorry he is for smoking. Then, he’s free. You might be able to use this issue as evidence that you need a roommate switch, but I don’t know how often housing takes the effort to switch roommates during summer.

When does Summer Edge end? You can’t have more than a few weeks, right? I know this is hard, but you very well might just have to deal with him for the rest of your time and then hope, wish, and pray that you get a more compatible roommate for the school year. By all means, try to get yourself out of this situation (at least it’ll distract you and keep you out of the room, haha) by begging your RA, going to the Housing office by Crossroads, or going to the RD. And, if you haven’t already, talk to your roommate. I’m assuming you already have but you never know…

I doubt that talking to the roommate will solve anything.

Thanks for the feedback you guys.

I was actually locked out of the room after he smoked and left so I had to get an RA to open my door. She even smelled it once we got out of the stairs. And when she opened our room she asked me who’s been smoking. I told her that my roommate just smoked about half an hour ago. I also told her that I really need a new roommate and she assured me that ‘it’ will stop. She took down our Room # and names and she told me she’ll get in touch. Btw, she wasn’t my actual RA, just the RA on duty for lockouts that time.

I emailed my actual RA of what happened and he told me he contacted his supervisors and will get back to me ASAP. I’m trying to catch him whenever he’s in his room so that I could talk to him personally.

You guys think I can get a new roommate? My RA seemed pretty nice…

Will be moving next door :)
