so as of now my friend and I plan on rooming together at columbia (we're both CC'13). The housing application tips page states:

Roommate matching will take priority over residence hall preference requests.

Roommate requests are not guaranteed.

Has anyone had experience with requesting a roommate? i mean, i would much rather get a JJ single than, say, a furnald double. and i've heard that john jay doubles are kinda screwed up - what exactly does that mean?

For your question regarding John Jay doubles, I asked something along those lines in the thread titled “Housing” and this was Shraf’s response:

there are two types of john jay doubles…the walk through double and the L-double (shaped like an L). with the walk through you basically have two singles but the person on the inside has to walk through the other person’s room to get to his. the L double is just a regular double with a strange shape.

there is no up side to living in either of these doubles and people who would prefer living in a double would rather live in a more social environment like carman.

^This.

If you were to request a roommate, you would certainly get a Furnald double before you get a JJ single. However, if you have JJ and Carman both ranked higher than Furnald, you probably won’t get Furnald.

This is rather amusing to me considering how rising sophomores are agonizing over trying to get Furnald right now. XD

well, carman is our obvious number one choice, but we really want an all first year dorm… and not furnald.

our preference is more like:
carman - room together
jj - room together
jj - each get a single
llc - room together
furnald - hopefully we won’t get this

to what extent does keeping us together override our residence hall choices, and should we explain our preferences further in the note area?

Well, the fact that they stated explicitly that roommate requests override dorm requests makes me think that they probably will exhaust the options for doubles before giving you a single somewhere, but I could be wrong.

It would not hurt to explain your preferences in the note area. They do actually pay attention to those, and it would probably be easier for them just to accommodate your preference.

And anyway, as I said before I think you have a very good chance of getting what you want either way.
