Roommate Selection Process

My son will be living in a quad on North Campus (he is in a Scholars program) and he just completed his housing materials…a section of this was the roommate selection questionnaire. In the experience of any current OSU students who let the university choose their roommates (rather than selecting a predetermined person or friend – he is OOS and does not know anyone else attending), do they read the questionnaires and try to match up people pretty well? How did the freshman year roommate scenarios go for any of you?

I talked with a friend that works for the University, and she said that the questionnaire students fill out for roommates are actually hand-matched during the summer.

I was an OOS student as well--Kentucky--and the roommate they matched me up with my freshman year is the person I STILL live with four years later.

I think OSU does a really good job of matching up people, and most of these roommates go onto to live with one another the next year...

Rumor has it that an old lady with a doctorate in psychology does all of the assignments by hand...

I was in a North Campus quad this year, and my roommates were great. We were matched really well in terms of values and how we live.We all emphasized on our housing forms that we don't drink, etc. and we haven't had any problems at all. I'm living with one of them next year and next door to the others.

I wish the process at penn state was like this. All they ask you for one the form is your major and even that doesn't seem to be a factor. Due to the influx of students in previous years, the matching process has become outright random. I was a biochem freshman major and was matched with a sophomore majoring in a completely separate field. We did not have a single thing in common and our beliefs couldn't be any more discrepant. Toward the second month of classes, we stopped talking all together and would only politely greet one another when entering or leaving the room--that was as far as communication went on a daily basis. Not surprisingly, we only lasted a semester and I have nothing but resentment toward him.

Hopefully I will be more fortunate this fall.

I will be living with three of my randomly chosen roommates again next year, and wish I could be living with two of the others (I lived in a suite of 8). It worked very well, just make sure you write in the additional comments box. We all did.
