bc if the econ’s curve is like ross’s or easier there will be no point in transferring. however, if its harsher, then that’s a different story.

You just lost me there… why do you need to “transfer” if you could apply as a preadmit?

thing is, i didn’t bother applying as a preadmit since i thought i wanted to do econ/avoid ross’s curve and i read from other posts that umich is a target by most firms. then, i read posts on the consulting thread how LSA has a sucky career center.

"However it is also way easier to be on top of an econ curve than a Ross curve. " What’s the logic behind this?

personal experience and the overall student quality

bearcats, can you link me to a profile of ross students (i.e sats, gpa, etc)?

btw, alexandre, when you come in, I would really appreciate your comments too.

bearcats, did this Indian Professor perhaps have the initials RS?

no…not romesh saigal …but romesh sucks… he cant teach his way out of a bag

i was one of the 4 that got A+ tho XD… actually, out of the 4, 3 came from my team…but i felt like i didnt learn crap the whole semester…especially with that joke of a gsi damon williams (202, not 310)

I had him for 310 and man is he terrible. I think he may have given the same lecture all semester. I think he was too lazy to make two sets of ppt slides for both classes, so he used the same slides for 310 and 202. I can’t remember why I bothered coming.

The GSI’s for 310 were also worthless pieces, I think their English was as good as my coworkers now(who are Chinese).

I absolutely hated that class and the thing is I am really interested in optimization…

i notice that too…underneath the slides for 202, it says IOE 310, romesh saigal…he’s one of the most worthless, overpaid professors at U of M, along with Chad Hogan.

“I can’t remember why I bothered coming.”

I never went. You learn everything by doing the homework anyway.

the thing about romesh saigal is not the grading. He’s not a harsh grader IMO. He’s just a lame duck professor who has no desire to teach and can’t teach even if he wanted to anyway. You learn nothing in his classes. Everything you learn will be from the homework. The projects are so poorly defined and written that you need to make a load of assumptions, and by doing so you are scared shytless that he may not understand your assumptions and grade you wrong.

I feel like I wanted to ask him for 2 hours of my life back after lectures, if I actually show up, which I mostly didnt. There was simply no point in doing so.

Having a GSI who tells you all he cares about right now is getting his Phd and tells you not to email him ever because “your grade might suffer” doesn’t really help.

Well I can’t speak for 202, but for 310 it was not an issue of easy or hard grading, it was a standard curve. My problem was with the actual grading of the exams. I am partial though because I got screwed by the first exam when I knew all of the material very well. A simple mistake cost me about a whole letter grade in the class. The man is just a terrible teacher; although, I am sure he is probably a genius.

As for Chad Hogan, I actually kind of liked him. I had him for ECON 101. He was boring, but when I actually listened I didn’t mind him. I know that probably no one else in my 300 person lecture would share this opinion though.

I had some awful IOE profs last semester, hopefully they will be better this fall…

“I had some awful IOE profs last semester”

Who? I had Heynoski, Saigal, Yili Liu, Goodsell, Herrin last semester…

Saigal sucks … what else can i say about him?

Herrin is just another Saigal…can’t teach his way out of a paper bag.

Yili is just meh…i hate him at times but I heard some people really hate him while some people really like him… I think it’s the fact that the people who want to be more on the operations/optimization/stochastics track rather than the ergonomics track thinking that the class is a waste of time…which it is… It’s so hard to keep track of material in that class and you better be constantly taking notes, which sucks… I just felt that he was all over the place…

Goodsell’s awesome… the class was so intimidating at the beginning and you think how the hell am I gonna finish all this work within a week…but you are getting an A if you do the work (which is a big if considering the work load)

Heynoski was awesome… Teaches so well and got an A+ which is gravy…

so out of my 5 … 2 are aweful and 2 are awesome lol… and 1’s average/towards the aweful side

oh and I agree with the grading thing… Saigal likes to make exams where part a) leads to part b) , which leads to part c) and eventually part d)… and somehow he thinks it’s fair to have penalty carry over (so if you get part a) wrong you are getting points off for part b, c and d which is ridiculously stupid)… and half the time reading the questions takes more time than doing them because I CANT FREAKING UNDERSTAND WHAT HE’S TRYING TO SAY… intersting choice of words…

I had similar profs

Saigal-awful
Herrin-Awful
Goodsell-I actually kinda like the class and him as a person, but don’t kid yourself the man never taught us anything. And how in the world is the amount of work required for the class consistent with its 4 credit hours?

Some Eastern European Grad Student for 316 who was far and away my best professor of the semester. Sadly she is getting a real job somewhere else.

So our of my 4 professors I would classify 2 of them as awful, 1 as bad, and 1 as excellent. Considering this is my major I feel like I should like more of the classes and I feel like I would if the professors were better. My favorite class ended up being my language class, the only non IOE class that I took.

I did like Heynoski and Yili when I had them even though I have no interest in ergo stuff.

Most of my profs for the fall are not listed yet, so I guess I will have to wait until fall to find out if they are any good

"Some Eastern European Grad Student " Dolinskaya… she’s freaking awesome…took that class freshman year second semester and got an A…and she actually teaches… well… hate those 5 minute quizzes tho…cant even start thinking and they are collecting them already… You realize the material in that class is actually harder than the material in other classes but it seems so much easier because she actually teaches…and the other professors…well… don’t.

<a href=“U-M Web Hosting”>U-M Web Hosting;
pretty impressive…

Goodsell never taught us anything but the way they structure the projects eventually teach you everything by doing them… Yea… I felt like I was doing work for a 10 credit class just because the time I spent on that class…but with all the extra credit/lax grading…if you do everything… there’s no excuse for you not to get an A… (but as i said… huge IF because I barely have enough time to finish all the crap…not sleeping half the time to boot… I was really ****ed off when I was doing those projects…)

It’s really funny how last year i didnt go to many classes because there’s no point in doing so…
Saigal’s class - NUPE… learned everything in project/homework
Heynoski’s class - YEA…just for the quizzes…otherwise I was playing madden
Herrin’s class - NUPE…useless… didnt even watch the videos… because well you can learn everything from the book…
Yili’s class -yea…just because if you don’t you get burned…quizzes…no text book…
Goodsell… - NUPE…useless… only labs…

So at first I was showing up to 201 and 333 and nothing else…as 201 ended after half term… I only show up for 333 lol…
what classes are you taking in the fall?

I am taking 425, 452, 460 and ACC 271 and language class. 460 just kind of fit and I was marginally interested in it, all of the others I am quite interested in so it should be a good semester if I can get some decent profs. Should not be too hard its only 15 credits I think. Its a pain fit in classes once you get to the upper level because they are all 2 or 3 credits.

What classes are you taking?

I think Ross would be worth it, though either choice (LSA or Ross) is great.
