Hey guys, I’ll be attending Ross next fall and I was told by a friend that currently goes to Umich that he takes Calc 3 at a nearby college (I believe it was a local community college). And I was just wondering if there is there any chance that I could take calc 1 doing the same thing?
In addition, I heard Ross “GPA Boosts” and I’m curious as to how this works.
And I was also wondering if anybody had any tips on laptops, as of now I’m choosing between the MacBook Pro and the Dell XPS 13 (looking to spend around 2,000$). Would you recommend one of these over the other?
Can you take Calc I at another university? Yes, so long as it is on the transfer equivalency list and you check in with your academic advisor. If it is not on the list, you may need to get higher approval (I believe the math department is involved in the vetting process).
As for laptops, it really does not matter much for Ross. Either one of those laptops will work. Most students have Macs, but I think it is not worth the money from a utility standpoint. $2,000 is a lot to spend on a laptop.
Yes, Ross has a very generous curve (when compared to curves found in most LSA and Engineering classes).
For core classes: 40% or fewer students get an A/A-, 60% or fewer B, the last 10% B- and lower.
For elective classes: 60% or fewer get an A/A-
Keep in mind, most profs seem to award the upper range of that (so they will a full or near full top 40% of their students an A/A- in a given core class or 60% for a given elective class).
Also, for Ross BBAs an A+ counts as 4.33 towards your GPA, which is dope. They might be changing that though.
I have the Ross minor and the 5 Ross classes I took were the easiest classes I’ve taken at this university - 3 A+s, 2 As.
Whatever computer you have now (if you have one) should be fine. There are places on campus and around to get computers.
If you must have an Apple…Apple runs their own outlet to save some money. Have used this many times for business and my daughters new MacBook pro. They have nice configs and many you won’t find in a store. They explained to me that some people buy and like a week later return it. Apple makes sure its great and gives the “same” warranty with their products so there is no disadvantage besides saving some money. FYI https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/mac
Also look at Best Buy for open box units. They are a lot cheaper. You can check appleinsider for postings on different specials from other retailers. The Computer Showcase at Pierpont also sells them.
This is what I’d suggest:
13"or 15" Macbook pro, at least quad core model
512GB SSD or larger
16GB ram (to run parallels or VMware)
Applecare.
Most of the software is free/cheap from the university. You get a license of MS Office while you are at the U.
$2,000 is way too much money to spend on a laptop. Most the stuff you’ll be doing in college is either online, or using MS Office. If you were doing graphic design, then that would probably justify the cost. For a typical college major, a basic 13" Macbook is more than enough. Macbooks are very durable and reliable, so it could easily last you well into graduate school. Be sure you get a protection plan and make sure you NEVER save your work on the computer. Use Google Drive or Amazon Drive to save your assignments. Laptops get lost, stolen, run-over by mascots, dropped from highrise dorms, dropped in swimming pools…you name it! If that happens, you can get a replacement computer, then just sign into Google drive all your work is still there.
4.4, not 4.33 but yeah, I believe that is going away soon - just not sure when.
