@bearcats: Yeah, I agree with you that the boosted GPA doesn't really make sense, but recruiters seem to compare engineering and business students separately, so it's not a total disadvantage. Additionally, Ross students are being compared to business students from other universities where grade inflation is also prevalent, so we've got to have some way to compete. It's unfortunate that it has to come to simple GPA inflation.

I could see why you would be kicking yourself for giving up a pre-admit spot. At the same time, the fact that you have a gig with D.E. Shaw is pretty sweet. It sounds like you have enough drive to end up where you want to be, regardless of your major or GPA.

I haven't come across a super-deflated engineering class like you mentioned, but I'll have to make sure to avoid those. :)

Additionally, GPA is only one part of the equation for recruiting. Once you get past the GPA screening process, then you've got to prove yourself with interview skills and a good resume.

I took EECS 281 by taking 280 and 203 before it. Those are the only prerequisites for non-engineering students. I'm doing a CS minor through LS&A in addition to a BBA, so I'm taking EECS 484 (databases) right now in addition to all my business classes. I'll be done with the minor after this semester, but I might still take 485 next year for kicks.

By the way, I'm actually kind of frustrated myself with the A+ = 4.4 rule because I've been taking EECS classes to complete my minor instead of LS&A classes to pad my GPA.

Great topic, though. :)

@nv2010: If you go from Honors to Ross, then only the Ross requirements matter unless you want to get a dual degree. I'm not sure about taking honors classes while in Ross. I think most students drop honors when they get into Ross.

just out of curiousity, you know how most applications have you fill in your gpa as something out of something..what happens if you have a 4.1? do you put 4.1 out of 4.0??

haha i am just worried i wont even get past the GPA screening, heard lazard and greenhill or other top boutiques have their cutoff at 3.7-3.8... and most BB have their standards raised due to reduced hiring as well..i guess consulting firms are more generous these days than the top ibanks, specially when it comes to engineering. I guess it also makes sense because in the past ibanks wanted the engineers for trading anyway not really for M&A...with leverage gone (at least for the time being) there's no point hiring so many quant people

@nv2010, no point keeping honors, honors really isnt that special.

I think you just fill out the app as 4.1 / 4.0. Unfortunately I don't have that to deal with that issue. I don't think many do, either.

I took 281 with Jagadish last semester (Fall 2008). Are you EE or IOE, bearcats?

@nv2010: The new building is amazing. Everything is state-of-the-art, and the Winter Garden (giant commons area) is always packed. The classrooms are pretty incredible too. I'm a big fan of the building's aesthetics, even though it seems like a lot of people don't like the new facade. Everyone will agree, though, that it's nice to not be crammed in Mason Hall anymore.

I think we are getting past nv2010 question: Is it possible to balance a enjoyable social life at Ross even with the competition concerning the curve?
