Rotary Youth Leaders Conf. Anyone been there?

I am interested in hearing of your experiences if you have been invited to a Rotary Youth Leaders Conference. Was it worth it? Would you do it again? The opportunity was given to my son and neither of us has any idea what it is. Thanks.

It likely means almost nothing on college applications.
Only go if you ave the money and you think your son will enjoy it.

Son did attend the RYLA conference last year. He didn't tell me much except that he enjoyed it.

The upside from my perspective is that several of our local Rotary Clubs have asked him to present speeches at their breakfasts and dinners. He's getting comfortable speaking to non-peer groups. He's doing one tonight.

It's a good opportunity to have in high school and the Rotarians have been so appreciative and friendly. They always invite my husband and me to these events, as well.

I did it and it was really cool (and free)
It was like a three day team building ropes course type thing, I highly recommend it

.. Not always true, in the UC system at least. For example, in UCSD's list of "special talents, etc" list, it was listed as something they considered. However, I have no idea how much weight it is placed in private schools.

I just got an application or this, and based on what I was told and the fact sheet, these are scholarshipped conferences. It's another thing on the resume that shows the student was a school leader, it's no hook, but it can't hurt. In my school only two are going to be selected from a class of 500+.

These programs alone aren't worth much, but they're a good way to make connections...ex. if you're kid wanted to get involved with the rotary clubs in your area in some way. I did a leadership program in my county that introduced me to a woman I later got an internship with, and also opened up some other opportunities for kids, like serving on the county boards. If it costs money, you should look into it. It may/may not be worth it.

I got chosen to go for free. One of the worst weeks of my life. Ridiculously boring. They even had arts and craft time. It was like a really bad summer camp. The counselors knew nothing and all got really high on the last night, which was actually really funny.
