ROTC v. National Guard Scholarships (specifically at VMI)

My S20 is considering VMI although he is not 100% sure he wants to be commissioned in military (Navy, Army, Air Force) due to the commitment. They told him about National Guard - less commitment.

Any knowledge out there about the various ROTC/Nat’l Guard Scholarships? How competitive are the scholarships? My brother is VMI grad/commissioned Navy officer.

The scholarship money would help and as he wants to go into Cybersecurity…going into military seems like a good option.

No replies…now my S20 has been officially recruited to play soccer at VMI!! Any thoughts on ROTC options/scholarships at VMI??

ROTC scholarships are fairly competitive and are done by service. National Guard scholarships I look at more as benefits. The bar is lower but the amounts and timing are more restrictive. I see the commitment to serve ROTC as fair.

If you’re in-state the National Guard scholarship may work.

@“Erin’s Dad” - thanks! Yes, we are in-state.
